New laptop....

About to dump the 12 y/o lt, for something newer.
Considering I use it only for tuning, what op system would suffice for the next few yrs?
Looking at Win7, cheap!, Win8.1, Win 10. Some of these have a free Win10 upgrade.
I'm looking at Asus, and Acer, as they have the 17.3" screens, seem to have a fairly good rep, reasonable prices.
A search has come with several pages, most of which is dated.
Feedback is appreciated!!

My cheap amazon ASUS died on me in less than a year...first wireless car died and then it wont start up. FAIL

From what I'm hearing from friends, the Acer is giving good reliability, decent price, and for the money is a throw away when it STB...
Wally world has the 17.3" Acer for a decent buck. may try one.
I just got my bud's Compaq to try. So far it's finding hardware, looking for a net connection. I just set it up for wireless connect..
we'll see. Most likely, my Compaq is the problem, but I don't know why...
