Just installed new rebuilt was doing good now it won't come out of 3rd gear the reason I say 3rd is because when I get on the express way it don chang gears and it don't over rev a 60 mph thank for any help

It might have been rebuilt to a 3 speed with no overdrive. Check back with who did the rebuild. Make sure they put the overdrive in.

I won't start out I 1st the 2nd then 3rd etc......it takes off like it in 3gear and just stay in that gear

Riviera; this sounds like a stuck valve in the valvebody.

Because it is a fresh rebuild, I would take it back to the shop and give them an opportunity to check it out. The valve may be stuck because some other part of the transmission is damaged and is putting metal shavings in the oil - causing the stuck valve.

If that's not it, you can help to free the valves by this procedure. I've got several trans working after a "dirty" rebuild this way. It may help, maybe not. If it's going to help it will free up the valves after just a few minutes. If not by then, there is something else wrong.

Before trying anything - check to be sure the TV cable is connected to the throttle body and is not out of adjustment.

1 - Acellerate to 40 to 50 MPH or so, gently.
2 - Hold speed and move the shifter back and forth between 4th, 3rd and 2nd gears. "D-3-2-3-D-3-2-3-D......."

At light throttle, the trans should be able to run in any of the 3 gears above. Shifting through these 3 "available" gears will put pressure on the shift valves back and forth and hopefully clear the stuck valve.

3 - Once trans will shift between these gears, "exercise" the valves by manually shifting through all gears and making 5 or 6 full stops, acellerating gently up to 60 and making sure it goes to all 4 gears.

Do this with the trans fully warmed up. Don't put a lot of stress on it, don't revv it high. The key here is to free the valves, not further damage things! If it doesn't free up after 15 or 20 shifter movements, you should have the shop look at it again.

Sincerely,
David

Thanks turbokinetic very helpful but let me ask if it dosnt free but it is a dirty valv does the transmission have to come out to chec and replace or possibl clean.I bought they trans.from a friend who bought it at the nationals he said a guy name lee tompson built it so I'm. Kinda stuck with it I'm somewhat handy but noy a transmission guy but did install it myself

OK I understand your situation now!

I am not an expert on the 2004R, my expertise is the front-wheel-drive units. One great thing about the rear-wheel-drive cars is - the valve body CAN be removed and re-installed with the transmission in-car. It's mounted to the bottom of the transmission, inside the pan.

If you are handy, you can - with proper careful planning - fix this. I would recommend getting a full ATSG transmission overhaul manual before doing anything to it. This will ensure you have the instructions for any part you take off and want to re-install.

It looks like they have $30 a CD-based manual (link) for the 2004R, also avail as download.

Sincerely,
David

Thanks again !1 last question if I take the car to the shop how much a job like this go for I know every area is diffrent just looking for a round about price

I would hate to guess on what it would cost. I am just a hobbyist, but thankfully haven't had to pay for any tranny work in years.

If they are a stand up shop that did the rebuild they should cover it for free. No cost to you. Nature of these trannies. It's costs you a few hundred bucks to relieve the stuck valve just because its a simple job and make some money on you, unless you have a good friend mechanic that knows trannies.
