new te 45 a is leaking oil?????????

Well here's another question . I'm in the process of getting my car running and just got a new John Craig Turbo (te 45 a) and oil is coming out of the exhaust side of the turbo and a little out of the other side . I'm using an 85 block and had to run the oil return line to the passenger side block off plate . The oil return line is -8 braide line that runs over the water pump and down to the block -off plate. is it possibility that the oil is getting past the seals because it's not draining correctly or is it that the seals are bad ? The car is still on jack stands and hasn't even been over 1500 rpm the turbo hasn't even made boost . My question is how easy seals blow . And how much pressure does the the return line experience . Yesterday the car ran for 20 minutes at 1500 rpm and wasn't smoking when I shut it off was just running fat . Just need some feed back . { car has fresh motor , new cam , new oil pump , fr. cover , ect......} THANX
 
I just went through this with my turbo. Mine was letting a very small amount of oil past the exhaust side and would show up as whispy blue smoke at idle. The turbo does not have soft type seals in it. It has a scaper type metal ring. Mine was worn and they replaced it. My turbo guy said that too little drain line diameter and too much oil feed volume will blow oil past the ring. He suggested for me to find a way to restrict the oil flow volume a little. Have not addressed that yet. Good luck

I don't think -8 is big enough..more like -12 would be better. The oil return from the turbo is very aerated and needs a big drain. If the turbo is fresh from John, I would bet that's the problem. I don't know if permanent damage will result but I would address it ASAP.
 
Kendall's right,-12 is the size you should use for the return.The seals might just need some time to seat in.get a bigger return and give it a little time.If it doesn't stop in a few days,call John.Don't boost it till it settles down,if it does.
 
Coincidentally went through the same trouble with a friends car,returning to the fuel pump block off. Wow did that thing smoke! The return oil comes out like an aerated "milk shake".
Cured the problem by using the stock oil return , [ I believe GM designed the stock return with ribs to help de-aerate the oil ] ,then into a -12 aeroquip line. It wasn't the turbo's problem, as any will "back up "if the drain is restricted or runs uphill. Now all is well and that was over 5,ooo miles ago.
 
That's why you need my "once through" system. Disconnects the drain line and dumps the oil straight on the ground - no backing up, ever...

JUSTAND TAP UR BLOCK SO THAT UR DRAIN LINE GOES IN THE STOCK 87 LOCATON. IVE SEEN IT DONE QUITE A FEW TIMES.
I HAVE A 85 BLOCK THAT HAS BEEN DRILLED IF U WANT TO SEE HOW ITS DONE.

YES ...YOU CAN DO IT WITH THE MOTOR STILL IN THE CAR.

thanx for all the great input . My friend just called Duttwieler and he said to drain it to the oil pan . So I might try that I'll see when I look at it tonight . Thanx
 
changed my mind just gonna do it the right way and drill the block and be done with it .....

drilled the block it was very easy should of done it from the start . No more oil leakage . thanx for the input
