I finally got my alky kit in and working  I bought it off e-bay and it had a bad pump. (SMC square bottle non progressive type) i put in a stock fuel pump from an 86' GN as a replacement... Should I expect premature pump failure??? Also, should I put in a lube like the stock pump requires??? I'm currently running 23lbs. of boost with little (1* to 2*) to no knock. Only getting knock with tire spin..... One more question I'm running a 93 octane TT street chip should I increase the timing?? If so to what???

Thanks!!
Tony

for cruising thats ok but by your signiture i think a 100 dollar investment would go a long way

Well you can add timing to 23/21 then pull fuel, watch your data, add alky, pull more fuel and by the time you think you got it dialed in during a nice wot blast your cobbled second hand system will fail causing you lots of grief?..

I was gonna go the DIY route, shopped around at diff systems, looked for deals and in the end I asked my self was it worth coughing up the biscuits for a turn key system with tech support or a steal of a deal now and cough up big cash for a complete rebuild later?

I coughed up for Alkycontrol

just food for thought

Ya, I know where your coming from. Wasn't aware of the pump being bad in the alky kit I bought and it was suppose to be new :( I have a pretty pennie wrapped up in the system and I'm trying to get some use out of it.... As often I read pumps going bad in those type units makes me wonder if the risk wouldn't be there anyways  BTW, the 23/21 timing is that standard with Erics alky chips???

I've already contacted Steve at SMC and was told they don't sell those replacement pumps any longer :( So, I tried to make the most out of the money i have wrapped up.... One thing I did notice today (don't know if it's because of the different type pump) is if the pump speed is not at itleast 6 the yellow light will not come on and it will not inject alky. When I turned it up slightly to like 5 1/2 the light flickered (thought my connection was bad) but when I went to 6 the light was on and alky was spraying

Contact Steve Monroe aka SteveMon
He has lots of know how in the DIY setup ... his page is Throttlebodys.Com

Sorry for no tact on my post.... just scary to get crankin and have it fail on ya then ya lose alot more then a few hundies

The old Shurflo's would handle methanol fine. The new ones will fail on some alcohols. This is a change that happened in '05 when Shurflo changed valve suppliers.

The other issue is you then need to put a fitting on the older tank to use an external pump. And the other issue is that the SMC controller may not be suitable for the external pump. If anything i'd contact Steve at SMC and get one of his newer style pumps to use with the controller and mount the pump externally. This is again making use of what you got. This again is $$$

The GN fuel pump used with methanol will fail. There is no doubt. Using denatured and lots of lube it may live a few months. Problem is when its starts to fail it will spray but just not enough.. pressure will come down.. and when alky volume goes down on that greedy stretch of road.. bad things can/will happen.

Sometimes money decisions one makes on buying used parts are learning ones.. it costs to go to school and get an education. This is one of those. At some point.. things are what they are.

Hope this helps.

Ya, I was afraid this pump probably wouldn't hold up  Itleast it has denatured in it and I squirted WD-40 for some lube, probably not the best route either

Wow, good post. I too ran into the same situation....purchased an old SMC kit in which the original pump seized up tighter than a frogs ass and nothing could be done to free it up. So of course since the pumps were long since discontinued I put an old Walbro I had on the end of it. It worked fine but I finally decided it was money better spent to purchase a Razors kit, even if it meant hearing the wife bitch about how expensive my car hobby is.

? did your pump eventually go out prompting you to buy a new kit??? Wondering how long it lasted or if you were being proactive in anticipation of it going out!!

When you plan on putting pump gas in your car and running it on the street(or track) at 20#'s plus of boost...do you really want a used, questionable part keeping your headgaskets in place?

The money spent on my NEW Alkycontrol kit is peace of mind when I put the pedal to the floormat and watch my boost shoot to 25#'s.

Good luck on your kit. MAke sure its all good before you WOT too much.

Ya, I plan on being careful as possible. Pushing the test button prior to hard throttle or launch will give me a little piece of mind... Eventually i will get a progessive kit, but like all good things they must wait!!

No, the pump was still working fine when I sold it. It's a long story but I bought it cheap with an "unknown buy as is" story to it, then i found out after i got it home the pump was seized, so I had a spare Walbro sitting around. I ended up getting over twice what I paid for it, so I'd say I did good.

I think what it was is me putting on a used Walbro was sort of the "jimmy-wrigged" it way, then I decided I'd rather spend a few extra bucks and purchase a kit and sleep better at night as opposed to living in fear/risking engine damage if the jimmy wrigged set up I had ever decided to give out.

Plus on top of that I like doing things the right way if at all possible. The Razor's kits IMO are designed to be on our cars, because they use a properly shaped bottle to hold the alky, plus the lights that fit in the dash, etc. IMO it's a very well thought out design. Also if I'm not mistaken the Razor kits don't need lube put in the pumps so that's another plus.

Thanks for the info... I'll keep this in mind when deciding which kit to buy.

It comes down to two choice's SMC or Alkycontrol. theres one kit out there with a cool name but a thread describing an engine fire as a result from not having braided lines with the kit is here somewhere.

Confucious say good kit not cheap...cheap kit not good
