If a 30-spline torque converter was incorrectly installed on a 200R4 transmission (27-spline), will it cause any damage to the input shaft or stator?

This is the current position that I am in with my new trans / converter package.

It shouldn't

The stators are the same tooth count between the 27 and 30 spline input shafts. The difference is the spline count on the input shaft and the outer diameter of the input shaft. It probably won't hurt the input shaft. I'm sure it's probably making pretty good racket though and not moving. You won't know till you get it out and down, but it's probably fine.

Let's hope not

Thanks for the reply, Mike.

Actually, when I started her up I didn't hear any sort of racket at all, but I guess that doesn't matter. If they were touching at all it'll show evidence when I get that converter back off.

Thanks again.

Anybody else out there have any input?

PITA is right! Before I embarked on this transmission journey, I hadn't had my greasy fingers on one before. Now, after all this is over I could probably do one in my sleep. The experience is what counts, right? That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

My plan is to have it back together and all clean by the time I leave for Bowling Green on Wednesday next week. This ought to be fun. I hate doing things at the last minute!

Getting psyched up about being under the car again tonight and tomorrow night.

Just got back from the trans shop and they confirmed that the torque converter that was originally given to me was a 30-spline unit and not the correct 27-spline that it should have been.

I inspected the teeth on the stator support and the input shaft and everything still looked new, no damage. They got the correct converter and pushed it on. This one works the way it should.

We'll be putting the trans back in the car this evening and I'll be driving it around all dirty as hell shortly after completion.

Wow, instead of paying a shop to screw up my trans, I decided to do the job myself and I ended up getting to do it twice. Bonus!

Here come the 11's baby!
