Are there any turbo's on the market that have very little or no turbo lag. If not, what mods must be done to reduce turbo lag to a minimum on a turbo buick. Thanks:)

ball bearing turbos or any properly matched turbo/combo/converter will not have much lag...some use NO2 to eliminate lag also:D

Would NO2 be harmful to eliminate lag if you only used a *wee* bit?

I mean you could fill a bottle up w/ a 100shot, and only use spirts to get your turbo spooled, and then stop, right?

usually nitrous is used just during spoolup and is turned off with the trans brake release.....how much would vary with the application

I meant like on the street, if you're at a light and can only launch at about 3psi or so, could you use a little bit of NOS to spoolup the turbo.

Whats a trans brake?

Sure, if you have BIG slicks! A monster turbo, AND nitrous on the street? What do you plan on racing? A fighter jet? Flash Gordon? :)

I will share my little bit of knowledge. I love my street combo! A te-61 turbo, one of the cheapest around, and a good Art Carr non-lock up converter, He says it is 3100, but I think it must be higher. I can roll on the throttle, and get sideways WITH DOT drag tires (Bias-ply, wrinkle wall type). No need for nitrous! A trans brake is a sweet little invention. I bought mine from Art Carr. Installs without removing the tranny. Pull trans lever into 1st, and trans will enguage reverse and 1st at the same time. Then give car gas and wait for spoolup, then bump lever into D, and away you go!. You can hold back serious power! Power braking has its limits. I can't really use my T-brake because my turbo already spools up too fast. I break traction at the track with 28" 10.5 slicks if I launch any more than 4psi. I'm getting a larger turbine housing to SLOW down my turbos spoolup, and move power into a higher rpm range. A larger turbine housing is a good way to reduce back pressure, raise the efficiency of turbo at the cost of slower spoolup. Just what I need! A TE-61 should be plenty of turbo to break some parts, and run mid 10s. You will have no trouble spanking most all street cars in your town. I enjoy it too much;) ! Big turbos have their place, but not really on the street. You would need a very high stall converter, maby head work, a cam, BIG fuel supply, tranny work, and a lot of$$. Fuel first, then air. Thats the safe way to add power!

Wanna get rid of turbo lag, get a manual boost controller and an adjustable wastegate. About $125 and your spoolin big time.

( the seller is Joe P, I have 2 of these and they spool nice )

( this ones a tad nicer with the bigger knob and colors )

You can get the adjustable wastegate from most GN vendors.

The 34 & 49 turbos are about as close to stock spool as you are going to find.

nitrous is great for eleminating turbo lag. i run either a 40 or a 50 (i've been told i'm really running 60 and 80, who knows, its barely noticeable when not used for spool up). i have a VERY lazy converter , with my stock turbo i don't spool up till i hit 35 mph (no tach sorry) BUT a quick hit of nitrous ,as fast as i can flip the switch on and off, and boost is built its that simple. your not over loading the motor, the turbo puts a far greater load on the motor than the nitrous ever thought to cince its only being used before boost is built. i went from 2.4 60's down to a 1.8, with only nitrous to help spool. i also droped a second off my et. i wouldnt' expect that much on most cars with a good converter, but i would expect something.

AND if you ever need just a LITTLE more on the top end its right at your finger tips, great for bracket racing when you can't get a good dial in.

with the right converter/turbo combo, no nitrous is ever needed! For the price of your nitrous setup, you could of had the right converter. I get 1.60 60' with 100% stock motor, TE62 turbo (Maybe it is a TE61) and a non-lock Art Carr. I am using drag tires. I can launch harder, but my tires go up in smoke about 10ft from the line. Spool up is way too fast! Pretty rare thing. Again, I hope a larger turbine housing will slow down the violent hit of torque!

I use nitrous in my Subaru WRX drag car, I have a rather large turbo for a 2.0, and the car is stick shift, so no building boost on the line. NO2 is a must! I have had many failures of crappy solonoids, switches, lines leaking, etc. Nitrous is a crap system that needs constant attention. Bottle temp always needs to be checked to get right pressure. getting out of car to run around to trunk at a stop light just looks stupid. I have done it many times and feel like a fool. Kind of like popping the hood and dumping in alchohol on the fly.

BB is the way to go. Just put one on mine with an .82 housing, stock dp and restalled D5. I thought it would be a pig until i get the new dp and converter but it suprisingly isn't that bad. If the brakes hold i could get 4psi or so. That amazed me cause the cam is fairly big and doesn't give the same grunt at a real low rpm like a stocker does.

I am tremendously happy with mine and you'd be too, Call cotton he will hook you up!

Thanx Jack!

Pete

Cool, thanks guys for all the info. This is really going to help me make the best choices right from the start:)

is your T-Type blue? well i dont really remember if its blue. i think i have you on video doing your 12.9 @ 105mph at bandimere.

my mostly stock car spools insanely fast. you cant spool until 35mph??? i can build 5+ psi at the line and be around 8-10psi before i get past 2600-2700rpm. we should meet up sometime.
