Any reason not to use a nitrous purge solenoid for my dad's alky kit? It will be positioned just aft of the pump. If it aint compatible with alky how long will it last?

Thanks,

Dan

Well, Im using a nitrous fuel solenoid on my car, and I got a chance at getting a cheap purge solenoid from a local guy, anything wrong with that?

The purge solenoid is not the proper materials for alcohol.

You're sure of this? or just speculating
I run a nitrous system using methanol for the fuel. In my research, when I was picking components for the system, I found that NOS made a special ALKY solenoid for use with methanol. If the regular solenoids were adequate, why would the company design and offer a solenoid just for ALKY use?
The body, plunger and seal are designed to be used with methanol. A purge solenoid is a very basic solenoid, and I very much doubt that they put those special materials into a simple purge solenoid. If you really want to be sure, why don't you contact the manufacturer of the purge solenoid?

You need a different seal for methanol. There are solenoids out there that work fine if you want to add one. The kit we sell uses a solenoid to control flow and prevent siphoning instead of a check valve.

When you purge nitrous you shoot it out of the car like on the windshield.

Now you'd like to shoot methanol on top of your car?

Or on a downpipe?

The ground behind a tire?

Becuase all kits you purge into the motor without having to use a solenoid to do so.

So again I ask.. Why would you want to do this?

And yes fuel solenoids have Viton seals and meth solenoids have Buna seals. But back to my original question.. Why?

Oh I see razor, you thought I wanted to purge the methanol, no. I just figured it worked the same as any other solenoid, and I could hook it up between the pump and the nozzle. Thanks for the responses guys.

Sounds like you dont own an alky system. If you did, you'd realize the solenoid wouldnt be needed unless you own an 84/85 Buick and the nozzle has to go after the TB. At that point it wouldnt be for purge, but to stop the motor from sucking the tank dry since on those cars, nozzle goes into a vacuum location.

With an 86/87 Buick.. the only thing a solenoid can do is create a headache. Sooner or latter.

Does a check valve come in your kits? If so what direction is it pointed? To keep vacuum from sucking it dry or to keep low boost from pushing the alky back into the tank? What if a guy runs his tank above the nozzle, a positive hydraulic gradiant might necessitate a check valve to keep it from draining out right? Or are we relying on an internal check valve in the pump? Wouldnt this scenario require a check valve in both directions? Well the obvious choice would be a solenoid right?

Thanks,

Dan

Ohh I get it now. Your engineering your own alky kit.

So you may need a solenoid after all. Due to how you locate your parts.

By the looks of that picture, another issue you have is not running a filter and trash can get cuaght in the pintle of the solenoid.

Pump has its own checkvalve so liquid doesnt go backwards through it.

DIY kits are that. Go and figure it out.
