I recently swapped in a used tranny/convertor and have put about 300 or so miles on them. It has been shifting very firm and felt very solid. Today, while cruising home on 285 doing about 85 or so, my rpms started to float up and I thought I accidentally pushed the shifter into neutral. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. I slowed and dropped into third and no movement. I got to the side of the road and I have no movement in any gear and the convertor sounds like something is rattling inside. The fluid is fresh and looks good... Did I blow my torque convertor up? Is there a way to differentiate any problems from the trans or the convertor? I think I am going to swap the convertor with my old one, but I don't want to go through the hassle if the trans in done.

Thanks for taking the time to read and I appreciate any feedback.

PULL A COOLER LINE AND CRANK THE CAR .IF IT DONT SPIT OUT you got a broken pump or convertor drive hub

I pulled the top cooler line on the radiator and cranked it. I only let it run a second or two, assuming that was all that would be needed to cause a flow. There was no flow:( I don't know much about transmissions, but again I will assume that the convertor drive hub and pump are both internal to the trans and not the convertor and that the trans will have to come out?

When I pull the trans out, can I check these parts or would I be better off with a local 200R4 guy. I will more then likely go with the 200R4 guy to fix, but I like to see whats broken too. Any parts out there better then others for replacements that I should be weary of? I am running high 11's to low 12's and don't plan on going faster. I can't afford to go faster, so...

Thanks again for your help!!!!

Ron

Sounds like you may have popped the pump in it Ron. Let us know what you find. Mark

I just got off the phone with a local 200R4 guy that seems to be very knowledgable and he asked me if I checked for clearance between the torque convertor and pump, I am not sure how exacltly he verbalized it... But how I understand it is I may have not pushed the convertor all the way back into the trans and the teeth may have been barely touching and now have worn off. I haven't gotten under the car to see yet, but does this sound like a possibility?

I am going to try and get under there later today, I am sure I will have a dozen more questions and if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Ok,

I have had more time this morning then I anticipated. Here goes:

I unbolted the torque convertor and used a prybar to push it back into the trans and now there is almost a 1/4" gap between the flywheel and torque convertor! (is there a recongnized short name for torque convertor?)
As per my discussion with a local trans guy, this could be my problem and there was barely any touching between the convertor and pump and eventually worked itself out or chipped the two teeth. Is it safe to run spacers, washers, shims to keep the torque convertor into the pump now that I have had a problem? If so, what do I use to take up that space, 1/4"!?

Please forgive me for my ignorance and again, I truly appreciate all the help I receive here!!!!!

As long as you aren't running a mid plate or some kind of mounting adaptor, the normal play between the flywheel and converter is 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch. You should be ok with that tolerance.

I pulled the tranny out tonight and things are pretty messed up. The two teeth on the front pump are gone and a chunk is missing from the torque convertor. I guess I learned that lesson:)

Thanks for all the help.

That really sucks.Im the one that sold him the tranny and its from the orig Art Carr out in Cali and the stall was a 3500 nlu.Worked great in my car.Best part is he got it at a steal so hes not out the money that the tranny/convertor wouldve cost. Its got all the hard parts that AC sells and it was his top of the line tranny so hes got hard parts if he decides to rebuild.Still sucks though:(

Yep

Still sucks tho. But I agree with all Broke one said.
:D
