No O2 no check engine

I am having problem with my 87Gn after i have done a complete engine overhaul. The engine idles and reves fine but no power. In the process of finding the problem, i disconnected the O2 sensor harness to see if it was OK. The engine did not show any difference whether the O2 is connected or not. Is this normal??? confused: Also, the check engine light did not come on.?????:

Does the check engine light come on breifly when you turn your key to the on position?

The CE light wont necessarily come right on. It needs to see like no O2 activity after 2 mins in D, in closed loop, at op temp. Thats a typical scenario. gnttype I believe lists the conditions to set a code in the tests w/codes section.
