I have a new tranny and it shifts ok when driving normal, but under full throttle it won't shift out of 2nd. It seems like it gets to about 5500 rpm and insted of shifting I get a lot of knock and the engine almost cuts out! T-link shows 5485 rpm's,MAF 254,TPS 4.72,O2 775,O2X 0,RETARD 7.5.
Any ideas if this is tranny related or something else? TIA, Curt.

I've adjusted the TV cable both longer and shorter than stock and it only changes how hard it shifts. It only affects when it shifts mildly (100 - 200 RPM). As for the valve springs they are 100# and only a year old ( about 1500 miles).

with how much percent of tv cable pull can you get a wide open throttle 1/2?does it go in if you liift the gas?these things are important in dignosing the problem .please inform.

The 1-2 shift is fine no matter if it is partial throttle or full throttle. It's the 2-3 thats messed up at full throttle.

If I let up off the Gas it will shift into 3rd.
UPDATE: When I ordered this Tranny I told them that it was for a 1986 G/N and that I just wanted to take the old tranny out and put the new one in its place (ie No tearing it apart and using parts out of my tranny). Well guess what! Right when it was put in I got a call that it had the wrong electrical connector on the side of the tranny!
Then, it did'nt matter if I barely touched the gas or if I floored it, it wouuld shift 1-2-3-4 by the time I got to 30 MPH! So I had my mechanic rip it apart again and take out the Govenor. Guess what, WRONG ONE! Not even close! So I put my old one in. It's much better except for the problem with the 2-3 shift that I first posted about. We took the pan off again and I notice IT'S THE WRONG VALVE BODY! It has only one Pressure switch! Would this be causing the 2-3 shift problem? I think the bone heads just sold me a performance Monte SS Tranny and tried to pass it off as a G/N tranny! Any ideas? TIA, Curt.

an ssmonte ho unit wont do that.is there a pipe plug where the 3rd pressure switch is ?what weights are on the governor?what letters on the v body?

IF...........

You put a gn govenor in with a non brf or cz valve body, this exact symptom will occur.
Like Chris says, you need to MATCH vb and gov combo.
Till you do, you will continue to experiance problems.

There is no pipe plug its just sealed off. What should I do now? Would I be better off trying different govenors until I find the right one, or just put my BRF valve body into the new Tranny?
TIA, Curt.

As soon as I can I will change over to the BRF valve body and let you know what happens. Thanks, Curt.

anything new

Any updates on this? My car does the exact same thing between 2nd and 3rd, if I feather the gas it shifts. All other gears are pretty good.

Also how much to replace the gov and valve body , and how hard is it to do?

I also have the same problem, please post an update!!!

It seems like I have a "lazy" clutch that sometimes does the shifting at the right time, but most of the time, full throttle or not, it will only shift from 2-3 when I let off the throttle.

I have an '85 GN valve body, but I was told the governer for all 85-87 GN trannies are the same, so I still have a matching combo.

Is this a fix I can do myself? I don't have the money for a complete rebuild, or the R&R and inspection of my tranny. The sad thing is, I've only had this car for 2 months and was told that the transmission was a brand new rebuild!!!

Thanks,

Guhan

lifting the throttle to obtain a shift is an indication that a reduction in tv pressure is necessary to obtain a ratio change.this is usually a sign that tv pressure is too high or governor pressure is too low.check for a stuck tv or binding tv limit valve,tv upshift valve ,incorrect 2/3 spring or sticking binding 2/3 valvetrain, governor weights binding, governor o ring leaking, governor cover gasket leaking, valve body cross leak into tv upshift circuit,or leak in governor upshift oil circuit.this info is based on the assumption that everything else is in proper working condition.i reccomend to remove and inspect vbody and governor and replace gaskets .

UPDATE!

I decided I to try playing with the governer first instead of swapping the Valve bodies. The governer that came with the Tranny had bigger weights on both sides, a heavy spring on the small weight, and a super light spring on the big weight (where our G/N 's have none). So I took the springs out of their governer and put them in my stock governer. IT WORKED! It shifts under full throttle again. I just have to test it out when I have time to see what RPM it is shifting at and make any slight adjustments on the governer to get it right where I want it. Thanks for all the help guy's, Curt.:D
