Tranny won't shift out of 1st under moderate to heavy throttle. I must let up on the gas for the shift to happen. Manually shifting does not make a difference. Softning the TV cable set point a few clicks does not help either. Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you! Brian

If it won't shift out of 2nd and into 3rd until you let off also then I'd suspect the spring has been thrown out of the governor.

This "throwing out" usually occurs if you floor it, take off, then suddenly let off the gas. Did you do this just before the symptoms appeared?

Thanks for your response guys. Acually this symptom has been present since the install. The trans shifts firm with moderate to light throttle, but if I get into it, it hits the rev limiter. If I let off the throttle briefly as you would with a manual trans when shifting, the 1-2 shift is immediate and quite firm. Come to think of it, I'm not sure if the 2-3 shift is doing the same. As soon as
I realized the 1-2 shift wasn't happening, I stopped form getting on the car any further. I presently have 125 mis. on the motor and trans. so I'm just starting to push the car harder. Wonder if the spring could have been displaced from the way UPS handled the trans during shipping? Thanks

my car does the same thing , but is worse from 2-3 than 1-2. How easy is it to change the gov spring? What all is involved in a 2-3 shift?

thanks

You have to drop the tranny pan and see if the spring is in the bottom. Of the two times it's happened to me one spring was fine and I just put 'er back in and the other time the spring was all discombobulated into a million pieces.

So drop your pan....look for the spring or pieces. Then post again and we'll tell ya how to put it back in. If you need another one get in touch with one of the tranny guys. Art Carr just send me 3 spare springs for free.

make sure you have the correct valve body or it can do the exact same thing.

Have the right valve body. Was real cold tonight, and the thing darn near stayewith me through all the gears. It's amazing what cooler temps can do for these things. Anyways, I hoping it's the spring.

Well, I checked the gov. and the spring is just fine. Going to have some weight added to the gov too see if I can get the auto shift back, and then tailor the weight to get the desired shift r.p.m.. I'll post the results. Brian

I was having some shift point problems with my tranny after a local rebuild. Shift points were extremely high. Ordered another govenor and had the shop install under warranty. Shift points extremely low now. I had other problems with the shop and cut all ties. I decided after research to go in and take weight of the gov. but I was undecided after I took it out and did some more research. I install a lighter spring off of an older 200 tranny and it raised the shift points from 4200 to around 5800 rpm. I took it back out and installed the plastic spring keeper off of the old 200 tranny and that firmed the spring a little more and now I have a perfect shift at wot 5200-5300 every time and took no weight from the gov. I think the the correct spring tension can correct a lot of shift problems.

OK! Here's the update.
1- Added weight to the gov/ got my manual shift back but no auto shift.
2- pulled the TV valve/ all's good there. Everything moves freely.
3- Checked TV cable/ everthing moves freely so I reset. Trans still refuses to shift 1-2 automaticly but will shift manually under WOT.
4- Progressevely softened the TV cable setting 1 click at a time until it was at it sftest point. Cable was fully extended. This did not change anything. Pressure test revealed the same line pressure as with the cable properly set.
I'm at a loss here. Anyone have any suggestions?? Thanks

Trans is out of the car and will be sent out sent out for a professional evaluation. I'm through pounding on the rev limiter. Thanks for the replies!!
