I have browsed a couple of turbo suppliers' websites and nobody is listing a recommended stall for the GT series yet. I have the tightest Vigilante that PI makes (a #4... stalls about 2700 at zero boost) and if I spring for a new turbo over the winter, I sure as heck can't afford to get the converter restalled! Anybody have any ideas what would work? (see WE4 in sig below)

Thanks,

Jay, why in the world would you want a new turbo?

save some money, get what ya got to run low 11's and THEN get a new turbo:)

(that 2700 stall is slowing you down a bunch with ANY turbo....go for like 3200.....Precision calls those 0 pump)

I thought the same thing until I read another thread that says his TA62 died. :(

A ball bearing 66 is calling your name Jay. ;)

Good luck!!!

I talked to Joe Lubrant the other day and their new GT61 turbo sounds pretty awesome. Basically it is a 61mm GT compressor wheel that replaces the old 60-1 wheel. It apparantly makes way more power than a 54/61 or 62. I don't have any facts to prove it but that's the indication I got. Give them a call and discuss it.

jay--did you know pi gives one free restall with their converters? if you have to pay- i think its about 260.00---len

Thanks Clayton... I'll do that.

Woody: I know this is kinda backwards... most people match a converter to their turbo not the other way around. But, I am "tapped out" after buying my Z28 and it needing more work than anticipated! I may just try to rebuild my TE62 myself.

Len: Thanks for the info. I bought this converter in early '96 and had the one free re-stall already. Actually sent it back to PI in about '99 or '00 for an upgrade to multi-disc, too. Should have had them restall it also, I guess, because I was wanting to use it with a Stealth turbo back then! Just that, right now, $$$ is tight and if these GT series wheels/turbos are the "shiznit," hopefully I can get away with keeping my stall I have now.

Thanks, Jay

Hi Steve! Thanks, but I have been to that page. Doesn't really address the new "GT" turbos, though. I've got all winter, so I'll see what I learn in the meantime. Thanks again! Jay

I haven't heard official recommendations but based on Joe L.'s descriptions which I posted earlier, I would say that the GT61 compressor wheel should be about the same as or slightly better than the 60-1 wheel, so a P trim GT61 would need the same stall as a TE62 turbo. The GT67 should be the same as or slightly better than the T66 wheel, so a P trim GT67 would need the same stall as a TE45a or PTE64. I have one in the box but my trans just started acting up so I don't know when I'll get it on. Banning Cohen just replaced a TE62 with a P trim GT67 and saw no difference in spoolup (Banning, speak up with more details here if you read this :-)), which says the GT67 spools much faster than a T66 and almost as fast as a 60-1, but that's only one data point. Likewise, the GT71 would compare to the T70. I think if you use the stall recommendations for the old wheels of similar size you will err on the side of faster spoolup so that's safe, you just might have been able to go a little tighter.

On the exhaust side, Chris Cairns posted that he found the GT-Q turbine wheel to be significantly slower to spool than he expected, but I can't remember if he replaced it with an old Q trim or a P trim. Anyway, Chopper at Limit Eng. told me that they really only recommend the GT-Q trim turbine on 270+ cubic inch motors, to get acceptable spoolup. So if you are looking for a monster turbo you might consider the GT-Q, otherwise, for now maybe wait and let others fine tune the knowledge base :-).

My new PT67 works well with my Vigilante "0" pump. Need more street time with it though to be 100% sure. Should know more in next few weeks. Taking it to Daytona for Thanksgiving for 2 weeks of fun. :)

I'm kinda posting the same info here as in another thread, so I'll make it short...

I run a "0" pump vigilante convertor. My prior turbo was a PT51, then I briefly went to a TE62 (borrowed from a friend). I have NO complaints with how this turbo works with my convertor. I'm also running a rather large cam... PTE218/222.

The car gets what I think are awesome 60' times for only 5-6# launches... 1.53-1.56.

Hopefully some more people will chime in with their observations. I'll have more "street time" with the car and turbo in the next month, and will report back with my thoughts then.

Use a 71GT-Q and a 3200 9X11 converter on a 231,, takes about 5 seconds to build 22 psi on the line with a transbrake. It works, 1.44 60ft, but spools way too slow to cut a decent light. I will be raising the stall to 4000 soon.

Wow.. way to drudge up a 3 years old thread.

No Crap!
on the other hand if he's anything like me he's still looking for that right turbo:biggrin:
