FINALLY got my 87TR running with its new pistons and pte218/218 cam! With the aluminum ATR pit bull mufflers Damn thing sounds like a wicked loping PRO Stock car!!! The issue I'm having now is that IS THE PTE 218/218 flat tappet SUPPOSSED TO BE SO NOISEY? it almost sounds like its starved for oil with its metallic tapping at higher RPMS. going to check oil pressure (heard that if using RJC head gasket kits with silicone stuff to be careful of blocking oil passages) but I'm just wondering if the obnoxious clacking noises simply means the car needs to be driven to break in the new cam and lifters? or should i simply have the car rev at 2000 rpm for 20-30 minutes? (is that the common census for breaking in new cams/engines?) TIA OH and Did I mention how i LOVE the way the car lopes now? LOL!

You must do this from the initial start up for the proper flat tappet cam break in, at the end of 20-30 minutes everything will be nice and quite.

I was told pte doesn't do cams anymore and that Dan has all that business at DLS. I just took out a 218*-221.5* and it wasn't quiet either if that helps......

I went to a 206 had the wrong pushrods and was .050 off new pushrods work like a charm. I had it at .025 preload with shims(.010) took them out and it quieted down even more. Running around .035 now seems ok.....

read your post, and coludn't help but notice your comment about it sounding like a pro stocker. Im sure it sounds wicked but if you think it sounds like a pro stocker you've obviously never heard one in person, only over some one inch tinny sounding tv speaker. please give the people that race NHRA pro stock a little more respect than to compare some street car to cars that are the closet thing man can currently call perfection in automobile performance and engineering. i mean no insult to you but im very involved in NHRA class racing and it bothers me when people compare & think their street cars are the same as an NHRA stock, super stock, or pro stock car. that just my two cents in.

Don't take everything people say to heart. I'm sure he's not saying his car is a pro stock. He's just excited that it sounds like it has some ass behind it.

Now, about the cam breakin. You needed to start the car and do the break in from the inital start up. I'm sorry to say that the cam and lifters may be unable to be broken in now and can totally eliminate your lobes. Only way to tell is try the break in procedure and cross your fingers. Others may have the same or different opinions, but from my experience, its probably too late.

oops...

Owies...ok ok ok, so it doesnt sound like a Pro Stocker... its just that I guess I've been away from turbo Buicks for so long that I've yet to hear a turbo V6 "lope" like a built V8. The first thing that popped into my head was pro stocker...guess it was a bad choice for an image. :P.
