Phone line to his room

You will need to run a line up to his room, and you both can't be online at the same time.

Some versions of Windows have what's called "Internet Connection SHaring", but it is very hard to get it to work with Dial-up. if not impossible.

DSL not available in your area?

This isn't true.

If the two PCs are already networked, you're one step closer. Wired or wireless is fine. You'll need to have this done first.

Setting up the connection sharing is a point-and-click thing...The upstairs PC [that will borrow its connection] is the more complicated setup, but it IS straightforward. Your downstairs PC [with the dial-up connection] will need to have Win2K or XP.

Lots of work to share a 56kb connection, though. I believe that Netgear or LinkSys makes a dial-up wireless router. Much more simple solution.

Netgear FWG114P's on eBay, very cheap. Mostly refurbs, some new. Your pick. This router also has a built-in USB print server, so your upstairs [or any other] PCs can print wirelessly without having to have the downstairs PC on.

I can't believe how insanely cheap this sh!t has become.

we don't have to be online at the same time.. Does this make it easier? If I did buy the ebay netgear router OR the ebay accent rs232 modem, what else would I have to buy and how do i cannect it to make it work??

If you don't need to share the connection, why not just run a phone line into his room?

To share the connection [wirelessly], you'll need both the router and modem. See my previous post:

Proper Router, with RS-232 for modem:
http://www.netgear.com/products/details/FWG114P.php

Here's an eBay search for a Modem that will work (external 56k, RS-232 connection for router):
Link

Phone line -> Modem -> Router -> PCs -> Done
Plug the phone line into the modem. Plug the modem into the router, using the RS-232 connector. Plug your downstairs PC into the router with a plain-jane Cat5 cable. Connect other PCs/laptops to the router via wireless.

The inherent advantage to this setup is that if you upgrade to a broadband connection (DSL/Cable) in the future, you've got everything you need; nothing else to buy.

From Netgear's page for the FWG114P:
