I know this is faily common in the NYPD to promote officers to Detective this way but I just dont see how (1) incident is justification for a promotion to Detective.

I know several guys who have been in numerous shoot outs in my PD and they aint getten promoted as a result. In fact, I dont know of ANY PD's in my state that operate that way.

To get promoted you need to study your ass off for the Det. exam and take a written and practical exam and score VERY high before you are even considered for promotion.

I think its kinda a joke the way they do it. So you can be a lazy POS ur whole career and walk into a robbery and do your JOB and get promoted as a result? Whatever....

There is no exam to get promoted to detective.. Only Sgt,Lt an capt. Det is not really considered a promotion in the nypd. More of a path of work. If you go to narcotics for example they have an 18 month bill to get your detective shield no matter the amount of work done. The NYPD is run different then any other pd in the country do to the size of the dept and the needs to run such a large city. There are 3 grades to detective. The 3rd grade is the one the dept uses to get people To go in the more dangerous assignments and gives to those who they feel acted heroic(not to often) 2nd grade and first are usually the deceives who have really earned there spot.

so being a detective in the NYPD just means you've been on the force for 18 months?
why does that sound kind of screwed up to me?

No 18 months In certain units. People usually have 5+ years before going into them
