Our new home PC just ran out of time on the Norton trial period.... What do you guys recommend we go back with.

Thanks in Advance..

If you want free and your copy of Windows is legit, I'd go with Windows Security Essentials

http://www.microsoft.com/Security_essentials/

If your copy of Windows is not legit, AVG is probably the best way to go.

If you want to pay for something, Kaspersky is hands down the best thing out there.

never ran AV on any of my twenty+ computers.

Never had a problem. Just keep windows update turned on. Don't click on stupid stuff, and save your money.

The only advice I can give, stay away from the free crap.

I like usiing security essentials as Jay advised,

but the best advice I've seen in a long time is that of turbo2nr

Stay away from Norton or McAfee, they'll turn your computer into a slug.

I bought Kaspersky and it's great.

3 computer license, but it's about $80.

You can update it every 3 days if you want to, it tells you when to.

Not sure what it costs to keep running for the second year however.

Got a couple of months left to find out. ;)

They are on top of all the popular and not so popular programs with holes that can cause you hacker attempt problems even with a firewall.

Things like Adobe, Flash player, and my favorite Winamp.

Update those when a Kaspersky scan tells you too, easy to use and runs quietly and efficiently in the background.

I think this is what I am going to try,

If it's a home PC, go with AVG or f-prot.

I do enterprise AVG installations and have several locations running f-prot with great success. It doesn't matter how good the product is, if someone keeps clicking on stupid stuff, something will find it's way in.

malware bytes is awesome and free, cc cleaner, spybot search and destroy, and avg are all awesome and free, threatfire works well and is free, the only one i pay for is spy no more, Windows safety scanner is a free registry repair and virus scan that you use right from microsoft .com and has saved my butt plenty of times...it works awesome on xp im not sure on vista though..

What i have found is theres no one program that will fix your puter if you happen to get a nasty virus you have to have a few of them.. and like was said earlier watch what you click on....

I hope you're not referring to porn as "stupid stuff"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's why Al Gore invented the internet!

While you are correct about norton and macfee "free crap" is some of the most effective out there because there are a holes that create viruses...

there are people that write programs to remove them as a service to the public or because they are bored and its a challenge and they dont feel the need to charge people to use them...

For instance the windows safety scanner Windows Live OneCare safety scanner: Free online tool for PC health and safety

Is free and made by microsoft and it scans for viruses( protection) (cant always remove all of them) but the (clean up scan) is a free registry repair that you can use to repair the damage done to your puter by viruses after you have removed them and gets it operating correctly again..

Who better to fix windows than the people who made it in the first place i recommend using it every so often even if you havent had a virus to correct small issues you may not know exist...try it it may suprise you:eek:;)

I think Live OneCare has been discontinued and replaced by the thing I linked above.

I've been using Avast Anti-Virus for over 3 years now and I've never had an issue since then. Before that, I had Norton and sometimes it would let things slip by. There is so much free legal software out there that people would have to be stupid to pay for it. I'm sorry, but when you can go on sites like Kim Kommando and other nationally syndicated computer advocacy that show you what's good and what's not...I don't pay for anything anymore. Avast and AVG usually out perform the commercially available AV software too.

Avast for anti-virus.
Spybot for malaware and adaware.
Komodo for the Firewall.
And run ccleander occassionally to keep it all running smoothly.

Nah im running it as we speak but im wondering if security essentials is mor for vista users cause the safety scanner works beautiful on xp but idk if it works on vista hmmmm:confused::biggrin: The scan just finished and it found 18 invalid things even with no viruses...
