Odometer stopped working!

Last night I started hearing a strange clicking sound that would happen about once every 3 secs. It appeared to be coming from my dash so I looked at it while I was driving. Then I noticed my odometer was trying to turn over to 53K miles and it was stuck. Is this a common problem, and how should I correct it?
