What do you use to remove the oil cooler adapter?

Also, is there an inverted flare union that can be used to loop the oil cooler lines?

Just remove the oil cooler adapter and spin the filter back on the threaded nipple:D Mark

Thanks Doc and Mark. Can you remove the adapter from above or do you have to jack it up?

above...

unscrew the filter.
unbolt the adapter
remove adapter
screw on the filter to the remaining nipple

it will all make sense when u do it.

5 minute job

of course, if you remove the oil cooler adapter and the special fitting that holds the adapter in place, you will be obliged to stay with the PF52 sized filter (which is fine for most people, most of the time).

To use a "biggie adapter" and take advantage of large capacity oil filters, requires the cooling adapter to stay in place and be "looped around" if you lack an oil heat exchanger.

Good point Tom. What does one need to make that loop?
Here's how I first struggled with it before coming to a satisfactory solution.

Th 1st picture shows 90º fittings but 45º fittings, as shown in 2nd photo, gave a better overall fit of the 'loop around' hose.

might be a dumb question but what does a oil cooler loop do?

You use it when you want to keep a biggie oil filter but stop using the stock oil cooler usually when you install a new radiator (F-body and most replacements don't have an oil cooler) or lose a bearing that junks up the stock oil cooler. You can just remove the oil cooler adapter but then you have to use a regular filter.

No such thing as a dumb question:D

I am pretty sure there is a thread around here that mentioned you NEVER loop the oil cooler lines. You always remove the adapter.

I would research that first before doing it.

Not sure why myself....
