Oil cooler

Keep in mine the 'GM used it' isn't really apples and apples here. GM put it on a 300hp engine. How many of us are still making only 300hp?


I do find it interesting that the general consistence from the peanut gallery is to run huge ass radiators with fans that will suckstart a Mac truck, external trans coolers with ducts and fans and shit, 160* thermostats, etc...... then double the cars HP, triple the waste heat, and toss the oil cooler.

Def good food for thought. With all of the equipment mentioned, does it not negate the need for an oil cooler? GM needed it as they were running the oil hotter to begin with. An oil cooler hurts nothing; it just doesn't seem to be required, at least under 450hp as far as I have knowledge.

I am convinced I should have one on the next motor though. I have been swayed!

Something else to consider.... Think about how obsessive we are about running 160 instead of 180 for detonation control allowing higher boost.... yet at the same time, we don't worry about how hot the oil is spraying on the bottom of the pistons...

...some how I'm having trouble remembering what we were originally talking about...but I am suddenly remembering why I've asked more than one one night stand to marry me. Some people just need gold medals. But, if running a deep oil pan would a stock style cooler be enough?

I think the trend to eliminate oil coolers was more a prevalence towards laziness and convenience then necessity. They are definitely a benefit.

I just got home from a parallel universe where cars came with oil temp gauges instead of water temp gauges.....


The trend was to run big ass oil coolers and clogged up stock radiators.

Also I found that the temps were not too high without my cooler. This was after loosing a bearing and rebuilding the motor. Stock coolers cannot be flushed fully imho. New coolers were not available at that time. Are they available now?

Anybody else have an oil temp gauge? I did find that my Raytek infrared thermometer temp reading on the outside of the pan was very close to my sensor in the pan. I know, I know, hard to do driving down the road....

With that said, when my new AlRadco radiator finally goes in I do plan to plumb the oil cooler back in.
