Hi,
I was replacing the idler puller today and I notice that I had a small "pool" of oil right below the cam postion sensor and water pump, on the top of the front timing cover. I can't remember if there is a gasket under the cam sensor? Also is this leak unusual? I does not look like it is coming from the head or intake seal. If I take the cam sensor out I can just put it back near the same postion as I took it out, correct?
Thanks Dan

there is a O-RING that goes around the cam sensor to seal it-
and the shaft of the sensor is pretty tight inside the timing cover-

you would need to purchase a cam sensor positioning tool if you did remove the sensor-
the tool is pretty cool, it has a little L.E.D. light and instructions on how to perform setting the sensor-

BUT-

im willing to bet the car sits nose down, and the oil is actually coming from the pcv grommet and working its way to where you see it now-

if you do remove the grommet and it falls into the intake valley, hopefully your intake gasket is the stock style FULL valley pan gasket- and the grommet will be safe there till you finally pull the intake later on in life-

How about where the oil return from the turbo goes to the block??That can leak on top of the front cover.

Thanks guys, I will check the pcv rubber and the turbo oil return line. I remember now, it does have an o-ring, I think it was a flat style. I will let you know what I find.
Thanks and Merry Christmas,
Dan

I Just check the car out, there is no leak at the turbo return line. There is leaking at the PCV valve with oil on top of the intake. It is not wet though. How do I cure that? Change out the rubber gasket? I am using the felpro factory style intake gasket so the rubber will not drop in the engine if I by chainge I drop it in.

Back to the major oil leak. With the coolant cross over at the from of the intake I do not think the oil can get past that and collet to the side of the cam sensor. It still looks like the cam sensor port is the cause of the leak.

Anyone know the part number for the cam sensor o-ring and the PCV gasket?

Dan

your right, it cant really go through that coolant bypass.. i wasnt thinking at the time-

that oring is a normal nitrile O-RING and im sure if you took it to NAPA they would be able to match it up for you-
the grommet is avail at GM, heck ask NAPA if they sell it-

i just looked at a motor on a engine stand, and the only other thing i see that could possibly allow it to puddle there would be the drivers side valve cover gasket-

how much is puddling there near the cam sensor?

Cam Sensor Shaft O-Ring

Heres a part # for you incase you need it .GM part#1959331

Mine collects oil in the exact same place. But my oil is coming from the front seal of the intake. Where the intake meets the block at the front of the lifter valley. I'v smeared some RTV over the area and it's slowed to a reasonable rate. But I think that's the most likely place for the leak especially as you have pulled the intake in the past obviously.
