Ok somewhat confused with boost control

Well I was under the assumption the chip had some degree of boost control capability. Not the case? I installed a TT chip set to 18lbs. Thing would run good under lighter throttle but would fall on it’s face sometimes under full throttle. I’m guessing too much fuel. Have a boost gauge to go in along with all the other supporting mods ie walbro 255, hot wire, 60# injectors, and adj FPR but I guess I’ll need some sort of boost control. If that is the case what’s the go to boost controller for ease of use?

Get yourself a scanmaster.
Fuel pressure gauge.
Dont go wot till you look at all the numbers.
Keep boost down on pump 93.
Adjust the wastegate rod to control the boost.
Read the stickers here and ask questions.
Many of us will help.

Mr. Spool is right. RJC has a good manual boost controller. I use the Grimmspeed manual boost controller.

Did install a scanmaster first. Have one of those fuel pressure gauges to run up to the windshield. Parts to install are all piled up. It’s just getting the time. Was hoping to get a lot done this winter but with the move and a continually filling garage couldn’t get the car down here.

See that’s where I was confused. I thought the chip set the boost to a point. So I’m sure I have been running quite rich at wot or close to it. So no idea what boost is being run. Should be stock.

You should be able to tell some readings from the SM. What your O2 is doing, knock retard, TPS, IAC, settings. You can really only adjust timing & fuel in Eric's chips.

As many others will tell you.....don't beat on it or go to WOT without more tools. The stock boost/tach gauge is cool but very inaccurate. You need to now where your fuel pressure, boost, & such is at or you'll be pulling heads for head gaskets or worse.

So I feel better knowing what the likely problem is. Have a smoke machine to check for leaks. Gonna run through the whole thing and get it running right but slow… thinking I’m probably gonna get it in for paint before I really go for the go fast goodies.

Do you have the time time to replace the motor?

I wouldn’t say I’ve been hammering the car. Thing hasn’t moved in months. And no. Don’t have the time to replace the motor. But I’m sure a shop does…

Working on cars has always been a love/hate thing. Considering just taking it to Anderson performance to get everything installed. Of all things I’m having trouble figuring out is where to tap the boost gauge. The rest is just replacing parts.

No need to screw anything up that doesn’t need to be for the small price of installing what you have, learning, & listening to advice.

For my boost/vac gauge I just “T”d into the MAP sensor line. Can also get it from the PCV hose, etc

Not too mention, motor builds, installs, tunes don’t come cheap.

You’ve got the parts. Put them in when ya can search, listen, learn & possibly save yourself some duckets, if that’s possible with these cars…..

Thinking of picking up a new exhaust and DP with a bonus I’m getting next month. Pro’s cons of certain systems? Are you able to throw the stock catalytic converter in if needed on say a full rjc system? Can you mix match systems like a rjc Downpipe and pypes exhaust?

Also has a shop made 2.5” dual on it. Not aesthetically pleasing. Could this cause a problem with whatever hangers they used?

That being said it may be smarter to put some money into the internals if you haven’t yet. Replace valve springs, timing chain, tensioner, perhaps have cam sensor rebuilt from people on here(pretty cheap), & basic reliability things.

Also go over the spring cleaning list if you haven’t done so over at vortex Buick.

Would def like to get some of the things you mentioned done at a shop. Was planning on valve springs. Timing chain. Swapping out that nylon sprocket and whatever else that might as well get replaced while playing around in there. General cost to do this?

No clue. Got the parts & did it myself. Try to do most of the work myself. Helps me learn plus I’m pretty good at it LOL. I only farm out what I HAVE to.

Look up Turbo Nasty on here. He rebuilt my cam sensor.
