In the next couple of months I'm going to be buying a turbo, THDP, and torque converter.
Heads and cam are staying stock for a little longer.
Metco lowers, ATR bar, and 275/60 drag radials.
What turbo...how much stall?
I was thinking 60,61, and 62. With the drag radials, should I go a little bigger on the turbo to kill some of the low end, but maybe pick it up in mph? Should I go with the "right" turbo and have the PTS drop the stall a little so that it will hook somewhat on the drag radials?
I'm not the greatest with this turbo thing, so let me know what to try.

Thanks.

What are your ET goals for the car?!?!? What injectors will you be running? Fuel system mods already in place?

Hi Doug,
ET goals...how fast can I go with stock heads/cam? :)
I'd like to see an 11.6@116 or so...that'd be nice.
Then hopefully heads/cam and more boost would put me really close to the 10's. Of course then if I had to go bigger on the turbo, that'd be fine.
Also, I have an AFPR, hotwired 340, and 50's. That should be it for the fuel system, right?
Car already went 12.5@108 with stock injectors, turbo, and modified stock intercooler at about 19-20psi.

Any opinions?
To get the car to hook on drag radials, will I need to stay conservative on the torque converter?
Or should I go a little bigger on the turbo to kill a little of the low end and try to make it up down track?

Welp, I ran the te60 and a 3100 stall 10" lockup, and liked the combo. Now I have a '52(better exhaust housing than a te60) and the same 3100 stall, and like it even better. I'd stay with the lockup convertor, but think 10" instead of 12".

Whats your 60ft with the drag radials? The best I could do was a 1.9 on my 60ft with 275 BFG's drags. And when I added the V4 it was a different story.

If your MPH goals are only 116 or so, the TE44 is a damned good turbo that can be used with the stock converter just fine. If you plan to street drive your car very much, the 60 series turbo will be somewhat "laggy" unless the converter is plenty loose which kills the MPH unless it's a LU style. I've used the TE60, TE63-1, and am currently using the TE44 on my TTA. So far, the TE44 really impresses me the most as it pulls HARD on the top end and has GREAT streetability. As for converters, do is right the first time and save yourself $$$ doing so. I'd recommend the Precision Industries 9" with a #4 pump (2800 stall or so) in a 5 disc configuration. It's a costly investment, but VERY strong and reliable. I've had a few different brand name converters and the PI was bar far the best for my combo. Now, if you see yourself wanting 120+ MPH in the near future, the 60 series turbos will be the way to go. I've wasted a truck load of $$$ buying either too small or too large from the go, so think long and hard about where you want to be in the next two race seasons and make the right choice based off of that. Asking people here what is the "best" this or that, is like asking a bunch of guys who they think is the most beautiful women....20 different answers. Stick with the "proven" parts and have fun!

Get a 44 with a Garrett .63 turbine housing, stay with the stock converter for now and you should be able to run 11.6 at 116.

When you go to heads get a bigger turbo and a matching converter.

Don't try to mix apples and oranges...

:D

I guess I could help him out a little, or everyone else for that fact, at least I think. I think he'd be more happy with the 11.6 instead of MPH, but he changes his mind alot though. More than likely instead of a TE series, we were thinking of a Cotton's turbo, with a Turbonetics hsng. and a PTS converter, since Bruce is the man. And yes it would be a LU converter. So maybe something like a CPT-60, 61 and a 3-3200 PTS converter would probably be adequate I would imagine? Wouldn't it? There is much more to the car as well, it does have quite a bit more stuff on it, he's just not tellin apparently;) . And the car has never been on the DR's at the strip yet, I use to run sportsman's or ET streets, he's just a big DR freak is all..... :D . Ok I will leave now, I'm gonna get yelled at anyway since I don't own one of these cars anymore anyway. :D

Warpspeed- What else did the car have and what did it run? And the converter will be a PTS Extreme (9/11).

Turbo V6- That's not what I wanted to hear about drag radials. :(
If it doesn't hook I guess I'll just go ET Streets. Probably should have anyway.

turbov6joe- I'd like to see mid 11's and figured 116 would be enough mph if the car would hook. The car will be getting a lockup converter. :)
If I'm planning on doing heads/cam next winter should I just go 60 series? I will talk to Craig and Cotton and see what they recommend but figured I'd ask here for some opinions too. ;)

strikeeagle- 44 w/ no converter huh? I'll have to check and see what people are running like that. I guess I'd be in to saving money and not getting the converter now. :)

WhoNds8- Rich, go away. You sold me the car...so leave. Go play on the Corral or something.
CPT 60 or 61 is what you've told me before, and believe me I trust you, but it never hurts to ask and see what people who have actually done this think.

So...how fast can I go with a streetable turbo and a converter?
And what turbo are we talking about?

Thanks guys!!
