I don't post much on here, but wanted to tell everybody our car club did a dyno day this past fall and wanted to tell you I took my 87 GN with 37,000 org. miles. My car is all orig. but I have red's 93 chip in the car. even the fixed waste gate is on the car, orig. exhaust system including the cat. also stock air intake. The car made 245 hp and 326 tq. this was on a dyno jet dyno. just wondering if anybody else has dyno'ed a stock car before.
Thanks Troyboy.

Well, I guess this just shows GM wasn't BSing when they listed the power output.

Flywheel power would be about 20% more, so maybe they fibbed a little.:D

It's very obvious they were bull****ting. I'm sure the chip is adding 15-20whp.

So what are you saying Bison?..... that GM was stretching the numbers?

I'm gonna respectfully disagree if that's what you're saying. I doubt very much that a Reds 93 chip in a bone stock car is adding much. It will make the car drive better I'm sure, but more power...ehhh I dunno, little to non IMO. He still has a non-adjustable wastegate rod, so boost isn't changing at all, no fuel enhancers, stock air intake & stock exhaust w/cat.

Y'know, I always wondered about that. I remember back in the day my '87 GN bone stock would do 13.9 @ 98 MPH in the quarter at 245HP. Now...my wife's SRT 8 Challenger will do 13.5 @ 102mph in the quarter and it's rated at 425HP. I know the Chally is much heavier...like 1000 pounds heavier... but they must be rating horsepower differently these days. Did GM UNDER RATE HP back then, or do the car manuf. now OVER RATE HP?

I would agree with Bison. isnt that why we buy a chip for our cars, more power?? The timing and fuel curves are raised in an aftermarket chip to ADD power.

They do now. Back then it was wheel hp.

Not true:

Pre 1972, engines were rated by either SAE J245 or J1995, bare engine, no accessories, optimal ignition timing, free-flowing exhaust headers, a correction factor for standard atmospheric conditions. Also known as gross rating.

Post 1971-2 SAE J1349 was used, also called net horsepower rating. Still on a test stand, but with stock ignition timing, carburetion, exhaust, and accessories.

2005+ SAE J2723, requires an independent observer present when the ratings are measured.
