On page 45, it says to install the lip seal protector, then install the piston, then use a .008 feeler gauge to work in the lip seals. Unless the feeler gauge is the lip seal protector, I/m missing something.

Seal protector

Referring to illustration 3C-13 bottom of page 45 you will see J29335 which is a GM tool called a seal protector. The idea is to protect the sharp rubber lip while installing it. You could use a feeler gauge but I prefer to use a homemade tool that looks like J-26744-A in the same illustration. I made mine out of a 5" piece of 1/4" copper tubing and a thin wire loop. Put the loop in one end of the tube and flatten it with a hammer until it holds the loop firmly. On the overunn clutch assembly I just carefully went back and forth from the outer lip and the inner lip with my wire loop tool. Next time I will makeup two of them to make it easier.

I borrowed some tools recently to repair my transmission and included was a device exactly as 3point8 describes. Worked like a charm.

I was going to say the same thing. I made my own lip seal tools by taking copper tube with a small loop of mig wire stiking out the end. Then crush the tube, in this case 1/4" copper line, in the vise, and voila, a lipseal tool.

Since the wire is round, it will not damage the lipseals as you work it around the lipseal. The loop gives you two contact points on the seal making it work better.

Another thing that makes the job easier is to make sure you coat the seals with transgel and dip the tool in it as well.
