Does anyone think there would be any problem painting the engine any color other than black? I thought I remebered a thread from awhile ago on this but can't find it. I have heard something about the black helping reduce heat etc. but can't believe that it would make that big of a difference with all the other variables going on that produce heat. I am sure GM decided to paint everything black back in the days because they really didn't want people seeing Chevy Orange small blocks in there Buicks and Olds Gold in there Cadillac;)
So what's up, do you guys think there would be any heating problems or should be fine? Would make things a little easier to see in there too.
I am thinking a red or maybe gold to match the car and yes it would be engine paint.

I agree.

Paint it what color you like. And you don't need a fancy expensive engine paint....any cheapy spray bomb will work.

I painted my last one silver to match the body and since then I saw someone's that was painted white and it looked so good. I've got that silver one out right now so before it goes back in it's going to be painted white.

WHITE IS BEAUTIFUL !!

A few of us locally have our engines painted "non-traditionally". A couple are blue, silver, "raspberry", etc. Paint it how you like it. They look great, I will say this. Get a good self etching primer in a spray can. You can get a good product for $10-15 a can. It will save the paint from failing, and flaking off later. Also, try and keep the paint as thin as possible. I have painted about a dozen motor in Centari enamel, and have never seen it flake, peel, or degrade from gas or oil.

Don`t worry about heat. You won`t have a problem from the paint.

My experience in the diesel engine world is dark engine paint is intended to hide oil and coolant leaks.

Engine color was a brand specific thing in the years gone by. Ford Blue, Chevy Orange, Oldsmobile Gold, Buick Red. And then in the mid-70's they started sticking off brand motors in different models of cars. The Olds and Buick guys were offended to get a lowly Chevy 350 in their cars. They even won cash back by complaining real hard for getting less value with the Chevy motor and an extended warranty too.

So GM just painted all the motors black. What kind of motor is in there? A GM motor.

I think my turbo motors would look good in some Buick Red on the next rebuild......
