I'm getting ready to start the body work and paint on my 78 Malibu. The car has the original laquer paint on it, with lots of primer thrown around. I was wondering if I DA the original paint if I could throw a coat of primer on it and repaint it? I've heard from some non-experts that I had to take the laquer all the way off. Any opinions/suggestions on this?

Its been my experance that in 78. GM used a single stage acrilic enamal on most of their cars. The GN is an exception to the rule. In my restoration bussness I usually strip all my cars down to bare metal or fiberglass. In your case, "IF" its ths original paint and your shure of it. You could get by with just sanding it and spraying it. That is if the paint is in good shape and there is no cracking going on. If it is laquer on the car, check to make sure that it hasent cracked. If it has cracked (Laquer Checked) It will need to come all the way off first.

Yeah, it's cracking. I'm buzzing it off as we speak. Thanks for the info!

No matter what it is, strip to bare metal. You will have alot of shrinking and die back if you paint over laquer or enamel. Not to mention, nothing sticks to laquer, it will chip and peel.
