I was driving my car on the Hiway yesterday doing about 115 Kph or about 70 MPh. Any way, when I pass cars, it doesnt seem to do it fast enough. Are these cars ment to have good speed and power at that speed? It doesnt seem to have much more passing power than my moms 99 jetta TDI! I do get 16 psi of boost when passing though on a 20 deg day. Any thoughts?

I dont think the car was designed to really pass well :)

I think the idea behind the fubar intake we have is the same as say a 5.0 mustang. Long runners = more low end torque with the sacrafice of top end charge.

Plus at 16psi on a stock turbo that air is still pretty hot even on a 20deg day!

Are your valve springs original? Weak springs are top end killers, and this may have something to do with your problem.

I dont really know if they are original. When I bought my car, the owner said that he rebuilt the motor so Im assumming that they were changed. I havn't changed them myself so I dont know for sure.l He might have been BSing me. Thanks

Change the springs....these cars are passing animals. Make sure you don't have exhaust leaks.

High load + little pedal pressure = boost coming on fast.

I've learned when I pass to pull out and make sure the car is pointed straight before punching it. It got sideways at ~50mph one time. It's a lot of fun because it's on the edge of traction on most passes with the rear wiggling a little the whole time. Usually these cars are great at passing. Top end killers include valve springs, and especially detonation but there are a ton of things that could cause it. If it's that bad, stall it up on the brakes to get boost right before you pass.

Its not THAT bad. i mean I was behind some guy doing only like 90-100 and I punched it when I passed him and by the time I was back in the lane, I was doing about 145. I just though that this car would have more Jam on the top end. When my car was stock I raced my girl friend at about 65-70 Kph and she flew past me like as if I were braking. She was in her parents 2001 Maxima. I also do have cracked headers if that make a diff.

I'd guess valvesprings on this one... People have said our cars are bad for springs. Just a guess.

And as for the passing thing, all I can say is when I rode to the track with Nick (87 turbo t), DAMN was his car fast at passing. Takes him like 4 seconds to get around someone and he's got the needle burried before he's even beside em :) Damn intercoolers.

As for my car, with the old motor it wasn't *too* snappy on the highway, but it sounds like it wasn't quite as slow as you. With the new motor, I couldn't say, but so far she seems to pull well in high rpms. I guess that's thanks to the big cam and ported heads and new valve springs (thanks Terry).

Hope to see ya at the track tomorrow Marc!

A rebuilt engine has nothing to do with valve springs. Most guys never touch the heads other than remove and replace for an overhaul.

New valve springs....$40
Installation............A few hours
Screaming by some ricer punk...........Priceless:cool:

I HATE TO HEAR OF ALL YOU GUYS WITH TOP END PROBLEMS,EVEN THE I.C. CARS TALK ABOUT IT.MY 85' GN IS HELL FROM A KICK DOWN. MY BULD UP IS VERY CLOSE TO STOCK.ITS MOSTLY IN HOW YOU TUNE THE CAR. GIVE IT A TRY.

mine dont have top end problems it fells its best when passing its full boosted before the tranny has a chance to kick down then shes on her way..

i was running 70 the other day and a guy in a impalla ss try to blow by me he hit it as he got up to my back bumper i heard it so i nailed it and about the time he got even with me i was boosted up shifted down and leaving his crab..:)

after i let out and gave him a chance to get beside me he had a wierd look on his face and gave me a thumbs up..

Maybe you should of stoped and wrote CRAB on his window , i got some new springs my self that to a buddy of mine on here and the car ran better in the top end , when you get the money try the new springs.

Its about time to park it anyways so I will get them over the winter along with welding the headers, new rad, DP and cold air. Should be good then.

funny about that crab ..

it is still on my window i took the #'s off from the track but left crab written on it so he was looking at it as i left him...:D

My car has no top end.

8.8@76 should be something like a 13.7 or so i hear..

But instead It ran 14.07.

Go figure.

But yea.. I NEVER have a problem passing people on the highway.. i can go from 60mph to a buried speedo in a few seconds.. thats never a problem.
