Has anyone done any drag strip testing going from a stock air box to a performance cone filter as the only modification being made for the test. I am currently using a K&N replacement air filter on an open bottom factory air box. The car runs 12.50s at 107.5. Can I expect to see any improvement or would this be a waste of money.

Thanks in Advance
Mike

I went from the stock box to just a K&N conical filter attached to the MAF. It was helpful for flow at the racetrack. However, although this is the cheapest way, it is not the best way in my opinion. Using this configuration does allow for better flow, however; the location causes it to consume air heated from the radiator and engine compartment. I received the best results by installing the Big Mouth Cold Air Kit from http://www.buickgn.com Turbo Regal Custom Parts. I purchased the entire kit that connects from the turbo to the included 4" K&N filter. It greatly reduced the risk of inducing KR by pulling cooler air from behind the lower air dam. I have had no ill effects from debris or rain because it is sheilded by the bumper and it is in front of the inner fender well. It translates to the drag strip because you are initially pulling in cooler air. This is in direct opposition of the before mentioned setup. Additionally, it has allowed me to run higher boost while in street mode using 93 octane street fuel. The cooler charge really helps with reducing KR. I performed this updgrade during the early stages of modifying my GN. At the time, I would say that is was worth about a .10 in the 1/8th for my setup. Your future modifications will further utilize its benefits as well. Not to mention the audible snorting sound it produces really gets everyone's attention.

An open bottom box isn't too much of restriction on a 12 second car. A closed bottom box will make a 12 second car, a 13 second car, however.

The Restriction in the Box top is the mounting bars that go across the outlet. This will start to show up on the timeslip in the low 12's.

I cut them out (replacing the neck with a 3" LT1 MAF) and put a 6.5" cone K&N in the top and ran 11.53 @ 118 and I'm pretty sure there is more in it.

On the street a K&N outside the engine compartment is the way to go. But, at the track, with cool down between runs, the location of the K&N won't show up on the timeslip.
