I just borrowed a digital camera. I have no instructions, but figured out how to take pictures. I took some of some parts I want to sell. I put them in my documents/pictures section on my computer. The pictures are all about 425KB, whatever that means. They display beautifully on my computer. I posted the pictures in my post for sale. The pictures came through fine, but are gigantic. You have to scroll back and forth to view the photo. Is 425KB to big?......and if so, how do I make them smaller? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I now realize that 425KB is way too large. Is there some way to make the picture files smaller? Other pictures that I scanned on to my computer are only about 50KB. Do I have to make the change on the camera settings?

You need to use some imaging software to reduce the pixel count and resolution. Typically, for screen viewing you want photos to have 72 dpi or 96 dpi (dots per inch) resolution. To prevent most viewers from having to scroll back and forth, set the photo width at 500 pixels or less. For reference, the banner ads at the top of the page are 468 pixels wide.

Usually, you can open the pictures up in your computer, using some sort of imaging software and then re-save the pictures as a jpg.

Even if the file is already a jpg, re-saving the picture will usually make it smaller in file size (say 60kb vs 425kb). This won't make the picture physically any smaller, just smaller file size (and reduced image quality). Every time you re-save a file, software usually compresses the file each time. Pictures straight from a digital camera are not compressed very much and are much larger.

To make the picture smaller dimension-wise, you have to specify in the software what size you want it by choosing some sort of re-size option from a menu. 600x800 should be good. Do this before you save it the first time and yu will end up with both a small file size and smaller dimensions suitable for putting in an online ad.

From a windows PC, for example, under the start menu go to Programs and look for some sort of imaging sofware. It could be under the accesories menu, or under an Office menu, or in the main menu. You should be able to find something. Don't use Paint or Paintbrush through.

Hey guys...........thanks very much. All your info was very helpful to point me in the right direction. I was able to get the CD-ROM for the camera and installed the software I needed and I was able to figure out how to resize the photos so I'll be able to post more on the board.
