Nice looking unit! I wish you would have went Craig 61 though. No one has the thrust figured out like John and he sticks behind his work more than the others from what I hear. Even though ours are basically the same you can see a difference in the turbine housings.

Thanks IC. The wheel is still on the 51. Turbo has over 6K on it, over 30 low 12/high 11 runs with upwards of 24 psi, spins like a dream, no shaft play, no leaks from the seals. Maybe I got lucky but I think the turbo is pretty good.

I like the 51's also. I just think of Red when a PTE51 is brought up. I have installed severa 51'sl on customers cars. I have a friend that has a 51 and has ran 27 psi. with no problems. We will put it to the test in a few weeks at the BOP in Bristol.

:D oh im here

dont figure it would have a problem running 12.0 range on a turbo suppose to make it in the 10's

as for chris ...i'll be there watching and awaiting..your the only one i know making any real power with one that still lives.;)

"your the only one i know making any real power "

That hurt. I think it left a mark. :)

I don't have a Turbo Buick, but I follow all PT-51/52 threads here since I run 2 PT-52's and was alarmed to hear of the alleged failures to the PT-51/52 turbine wheels.

I have a SBC 427 using two PT-52's that made 1189hp and 998ft lbs on 93 octane at 18 psi of boost. Admittedly, I've only put about 300 miles on it, but several WOT dyno runs and the turbos look great and are tight with no unusual runout or end-play. I may not be putting as much pressure on the wheels as some of you guys, but I'm getting almost maximum CFM from them, accoding to their CFM/hp ratings and my dyno results, but there has been no indication of any problems. I've even taken them apart for various reasons, and they look great. I can't help but think that the isolated failures that have been described on this forum are just that - isolated and possibly the result of contributing factors unrelated to the turbo design or manufacturer.

I just downloaded your clips. Awesome!! Except for the electronics I have an idea of how you put that together but what did you use for fueling, intake, etc....

Your 54 looks identical to my 52, and my 52 looks nothing like your 51. I would have thought that all the 50 series would look the same. Very nice looking turbo you have there!!!

well your maxing out the intake side but by far not pushing as much on the exaust side as we do

to start with your down to 213. 5 cubic inch per turbo
and at 18# your not spinning the turbo's hard at all

I wish you luck with them

later...RED

hey Bob, my 51 don't look like your old 51. Hmmm. I have a smooth side plate on the compressor side (facing the exhaust side) like your new 54 does.. HMMM. Wonder if there are different 51's??
SEE?

Hmmm, 10s shouldn't be a problem with a good 60ft and some boost. The MSD 50s won't be enough if you go to the GN1s, I was at the edge with stock heads. I've been running my 54 for 4 years, never a problem, 500+ runs, most in the low 11s and high 10s.

I was hoping for high tens. I got the GN-1s bolted on already and as usual my injectors are already too small.

With regard to the turbos, the chart Intercooler posted a while ago is pretty interesting. The 51 and 53 share compressor wheels and the 52 and 54 share exhaust wheels so a 51 and a 53 are the same on the compressor side.

Frank, I have seen a couple 51s like yours with the smooth side plate. I figured mine was an older style.

lookin at PTE's website the 51 there has the type you have. Mine is prolly the older type. The turbo is 4 years old or so.. Hey RED. Which type 51 did you have???

Frank,

I think I remember when you got yours and posted about it before the board crahsed. Didn't you have a Cheetah turbo before the 51?

Bob

Yes Bob, that is correct. I had a Turbonetics Cheetah on it before the 51. What was the date of the board crash? Thats when I got my current 51..

oh great. :(
I was hoping that Red had the other type and maybe I had the 'good' one. Oh well.. lol
