ENGINE QUESTIONS

Thanks to all those that tried to help me yesterday ( my first day of GN ownership when I found out my new cars TE 44 was toast. We decided to look at the rest of the engine since this worried all of us when it happend and didnt want to have anything else go wrong. We pulled the intake and oil pan to get a closer look at what I bought and everything looks like it was done well.

In my new GN There is a fresh engine with very low run time. Cast Pistons (Silovite?), WE DONT REALY LIKE CAST PISTONS!! what do you guys think? ARP 2000 series rod bolts, The cam has a green Stripe on it( does anyone know what cam it might be from there own experience as the engine is still in the car), stock heads with new springs, keepers ect, stock rockers.

The crank has these numbers cast into it.
877
Is it a turbo crank?

We are not planning on serious track duty here . Just want to go every once and a while and go low 12's as that is a fast as we can go with a roll bar.

The car has a TE 44 ( we are buying a new one or fixing the one that is toast) PTE front mount, 50# injectors, poston headers,THDP, will be buying an new exhaust system ( what do you guys recommend we like quite cars) lubrant chip, dual bosch pumps, art carr 16930 9" converter, air bags, ATR rear sway bar.

Do you think the cast pistons will be ok? I know the stock ones are cast and I see you guys going 11's on them all the time so I think we can just let them be since the rest of the work looks so nice.

Please guys we need all of the guys on this boards help. We are new to this whole TR thing and want to be part of this group really bad so please evryone come and put in your 2 cents worth.

Oh how much do you think it will cost to have the TE 44 redone. the shaft is bent and the compresor wheel is toast. Any good guys that wont kill me? After all I just bought and shipped the car to me. OUCH!!

Once again we love this place.

from my limited experience with these engines and reading A LOT on this site i'd say the stock pistons are more than adequate for what you want out of the motor...

You MIGHT be able to find a board member about rebuilding that turbo but they are almost as much to rebuild as they are to replace. HTH

Does anyone have a used good TE 44 for sale ? Or another Turbo that would work well on this car. I was just told the pistons are Federal mogul hypers. Will they cause me trouble?

.

Be patient,

Saturday and Sunday are farely slow, on the board. Im sure youll get some responses during week.

I colud be wrong, but wasen't Silv-o-lite, a line of Keith Black pistons? Hypers if I'm remembering correctly. I know there's two sides of thought on these so i'm not going to open that can of worms. But I figuresd I would chime in witha little info.

Contact John Craig from limit engineering for the turbo rebuild. If just the bearings and seals then you shoulf only be about 250 dollars give or take 25 buck. I just had my turbo rebuilt with a bad compressor wheel, backing plate and shaft and only cost me 379.00. That is till cheaper than a new turbo. I can help you with the cam. Sounds like everything else is OK. For your times I would leave it like it is, rebuild the turbo and tune it. I think you will be suprised.

pistons

IF............ big IF! they are hypereutectic, keep em!
cast pistons have less than 10% silicon in them, and are less durable, hypereutectic have more silicon in them, and are much more durable, able to withstand much more abuse,
not as much as forged pistons.
depending on how hard your gonna lean on it, the pistons you have should be fine, lotsa boost, lotsa detenation, lean conditions, nuthin will survive!
contact silvolite pistons, see what you have, there should be a casting # on the bottom of the piston crown.
good luck

If they are the Federal Mogul hyps. they are very good pistons. I have built four TR motors using these pistons. They hold up very well and are lighter than the stock pistons. I have seen them run in the 10's with no problems.
