I did both of my turbos when they were brand new, so I cannot comment on the rust situation.

Yes, Castings need to be blasted but not with a fine media. It needs to be aggressive to open the pores.
Course sand or 120 grit and down aluminum oxide will work. Thats not saying for your own use you can not get by not doing it properly and just touch up every year...;)

rmar, do you happen to have a pic of that "cast grey"?

There might be one on our web site.

guys you know what is cheaper is the VHT stuff that is good for 12-1400, my turbo housing looks the same after a year as the one posted.
VHT stuff is spray and notes it is a powder coat type and will require you to take a heat gun to it for a bit. I dried mine for afew days inside with only a few moments of heat gun. I mounted it and let the baking begin. i'll have to take a pic.

found abit older pic. VHT "very" high temp Flameproof Header/Ceramic Coating 1300-2000 F
it has instructions how to bake and cool part when mounted on car.

I'd ceramic coating it black. Black holds up better against the heat then silver. I did my exhaust housing and DP elbow black, for 60 bucks. Holds up well!!!
