I've had a popping/ticking noise coming from my car when it's in gear only coming from my car. I finally narrowed it down to coming from somewhere around the TC and tranny area. I can only hear it when im not moving, but it could be still there when the car goes and I just can't hear it. I checked the bolts and teeth on the flexplate and everything is fine. Except it's got a crap D7 TC but that's been there ever since I've had this car. The car drives fine but I don't use it because I don't want this to get worse. Any ideas or suggestions or things to look for?

KidWithAToy had this same problem and it turned out to be some sleeve in his TC failed. He was smart enough not to drive the car when it began. His tranny fluid looked like new with no debris in it. When he removed the TC the damage was obvious and easily viewed. Looked like the sleeve had broken into several pieces but had not contaminated the fluid. He had no symptoms when the car was in park or neutral. In gear and at a stop we could hear it. May be wise not to drive it until further tests can be ran or the TC checked out. The TC was an Orange Crush. Anybody else?

thanks a lot. Hopefully that's the problem because I was planning to replace the TC anyway since it's the wrong one and all. Is that a difficult job? I'm at school and dont have that many tools here. Would it just be easier to have a shop swap in the stock one?

To change your TC you need to remove, or at least MOVE the trans towards the rear of the car about 6 inches. It is difficult to do on your back, but not too bad if you've done it before.

Check your torque convertor bolts to make sure they are tight. If they have loosened up, they will make a "ticking" noise. You can check to see if they are tight by simply removing the dust shield (which is under the torque convertor and has a .5" hole in it) and remove the 4 10mm bolts (I think they are 10mm). Move the car little by little (making sure you chock the wheels when you are under it) or jack the rear tires off the gound. There are 3 15 mm bolts that hold the torque convertor to the flywheel. Make sure they are tight.

I had a whirring/ticking noise from my TC in the past. Put it in gear and shut off the car, with the d/s door open, and listen to see if the whirring noise stops as soon as the key is turned off, or as soon as the TC slows down. My case was the latter, and the TC had to be repaired.
