Power amplified antennas?

I don't want to use my stock GN antenna as every time it goes up and down I anticipate it will break.

I would like to keep it retracted but obviously then radio reception is poor.

I was in a car audio place today and saw a powered signal amplifier for antennas. Looked like what I need. Was about 75 bucks BUT could not be placed near metal.

I want one that I can tuck in the engine compartment near the stock antenna.

I suppose I could put it in the glove box. Point being I don't want to see it.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I tried one of those things on my Iroc after I had to replace passenger fender and didn't want to drill the hole for the antenna. Mine was just a little "cheapy" from Radio Shack, no where near $70, and I could tell too, didn't work very good. So I just used a stock mast type antenna lying flat under the fender lip. Didn't work as good as would standing straight up, but worked better than the "power amplifier".
