I wonder why they stopped putting the antenna in the windshield? Must have been a cost issue

Another great feature of your antenna im not sure you know,is if it doest break,a metra can have its mast replaced without removal of the motor.....
If mast ever breaks:
1)take off top nut
2)turrn on ant and let it and help it push out old mast and broken peices.
3)insert new mast.turn off radio and motor will pull down new mast.
4)reinstall nut.......

I think it even came with an extra mast.

There used to be a repair kit you could buy at a GM dealer, don't kow if it's still available. The most common cause of failure is the plastic drive cable inside breaks. Repair is very simple. The hardest part is getting the unit out of the fender.

Repair kit for the cable used to be p/n 22038195, superseded by 19151297 but is discontinued.

This is the same with the metro,but if the old part/mast comes out,its all repaired from the outside....easy.

The motor running when the car was off is exactly what happened to mine last week. I guess after 24 years, what can you expect ? Thanks for the information and I'll choose an option soon

I bought the Metra AW-PW22 off ebay. So far after 3 months so far so good.

Sorry, don't mean to hijack but seems like the Metra PW22 is working for GNRick and has a nice feature of replacing broken antenna according to Garyk1970. I have a brand new Metra PW-22 never opened if someone wants to buy it. It came with the car when I purchased it 2 years ago but I installed a fixed mast instead. I will sell for $50 shipped.

What's different about it compared to a GM antenna?

Mine just went out. The motor stayed running, antenna was sticking out about 3 inches (but you could pull it all the way up freely without any resistance). Had to disconnect the plug by the AC compressor to get it to stop.

Hey guys the Metra sucks. After using it for several months now I found the FM reception is really bad and the AM is almost nonexistant. I should have updated sooner. Sorry.

I ended up going with the metra inside ant. It goes in slick Also put one on a customers car. Reception is not real good though.

What parts are needed inside the fender to convert to a fixed mast?

there has to be a more reliable GM antenna .What about a late model f body antenna will it work ?Id like to go to a GM antenna what is the part number of the rplacement antenna some vendors are selling

Well, I ordered new mast/cable with a bracket from NOS4GN today. If that doesn't fix it, I'm going to forgo replacing the whole assembly and just this instead:

I doubt that "hidden power antenna" will work. SAme place I bought my Metra from.

Mine was in the up position ever since I've had the car, back 5-6 years ago I had the car repainted so at the same time I decided to replace the power antenna and it lasted only a few months. I now have SAT radio and don't worry about it anymore. The mast stays in the down position and I have pretty much forgotten about it. Until I read this thread
