I've got an '84 T-type. My power steering went out last week. Thankfully I was in my neighborhood so I got home real easily. It turned out that it was just a lose nut, sort of near the front of the engine. It was really hard to reach to tighten again but I got it tightened down. My power steering went out, but my brakes were affected as well. It seems like it is leaking from the same place again, pretty slowly, but still leaking. Also, when my car is cold, there is a harsh sound that comes from the engine (probably a belt or something attached to the belt system) when I apply the breaks or turn the wheel far. I can feel a vibration in the brake pedal too that accompanies the sound. It goes away after the engine warms up. Sometimes the feeling in the pedal and a little of the noise comes back slightly when the engine has been running for awhile and I am at low rpms (ex: sitting at a stoplight) Aren't power systems for steering and brakes separate and what is causing the noise? Does anyone know anything about this strange situation?

what the vehicle has is called hydroboost. this is when the power steering pump controls the brakes also. sounds like you have morning sickness this is when the power stering fluid is thicker when cold and thins when warmed up. as for the noise comming back when warmed up, the power steering pump is starting to go on you so look for a new one soon. i sold mine and put vacuum on when i built an 87 engine for my 84 gn.

Any idea where I can get a new pump, how much it will be, and if I should attempt to replace it myself with my limited knowledge?

I'd be willing to bet that....

.... you vibration is caused by a slipping belt. Is the leaking fluid getting on the belt?
