Stock 86 T type:

About a minute after start up, I get a slight power steering whine. Doesn't go away until I shut it off. I can also feel a slight resistance when I turn like the pumps just not quite doing its job. No leaks, but I replaced power steering hoses anyway. Fluid level is fine. I did a search and discovered the recall with the reverse thread cap resevoir, but apperantly mine has already been switched over because my cap is reverse thread. Everything underneath is in good shape, drives fine. Could I have a power steering pump going out?

thanks for any input.

Hi,
I'm not sure what the reverse cap fix does for our cars, unless it to keep excess air out of the system. Anyhow,my car whines a bit, and I understand that this is a pretty generic problem. Do you disagree? Let us know...

I chased a whining ps pump to the tune of three replacements. Ended up being one of the reservoir hoses was twisted and kinked right behind the pump restricting the flow.

I had the same problem on my 86 T-type. There is an updated reservoir I bought from GM. Not sure if its still available anymore. The new reservoir where the lines come out of are a little different. I think they did this because the 86 reservoir was know to foam the power steering fluid thus making it whine.

My new power steering res. has reverse threads on it also.

How could I tell if mine is a updated one? is there a part #? I did a search and read that originally they where right hand thread caps, then a recall was done for a new resevoir, and you can knew if it was the updated one because it had reverse thread cap.

I'll check for kinked hoses tonight. I don't feel its a general kind of problem. Its definetly a very noticable whine when I turn the wheel, and I can feel very noticeable resistance. My 87 gn does not make any power steering noise and has no resistance whatsoever, so theres definetly something wrong in the system.

Here's the GM part # 25531140 for the reservoir. Part number for the feed hose #25531141 and return hose #7828506. Don't know if they're still available though.

The updated reservoir has the oil lines coming out differently than the original.

My car with the new res. both lines coming out the bottom point towards the pass. side.

The old reservoir the small line points to the pass. side and the larger line angles down towards the radiator.

None of those #'s are available from the dealers anymore. The larger of the 2 hoses is available from PepBoys, and probably most automotive replacement stores. Ensure that what you are purchasing is a hose designed for power steering fluid use, and not general use, otherwise it will seep continually. If you have a new design resevoir, 1 of the hoses is larger than the other 1. On the older design, it seems to me that both hoses are the same size. 1 outlet should point straight ahead, and the other 1 angle off a little towards passenger side as shown below.
This place is the last place that I know of that has nos power steering resevoirs left in stock. For used ones, try GBodyParts.com. Additionally, I have heard that "Lucas Power Steering fluid Restorer" will remove almost any squeal or noise from tired power steering pumps. HTH

My 84 regal does this when i turn the wheels all the way in one direction. Is this normal or is something wrong?
