Powermaster alternator install. Different plus ?

He guys decided to go with a new powermaster 150amp chrome smooth look alternator #37297-313. Received it today and noticed the plugs are different. Powermaster alternator has two prongs on its plug and my stock alternator has a plug with three wires and 4 prongs on the alternator. I was wondering if powermaster had a plug to adapt it but they don't. Powermaster tech guy told me I should be ok to just hook the 2 wires up to the post in the back and leave my stock plug unplugged. Not sure if this is what I want to do. I'm assuming that the wires for that plug go to the idiot light on the dash which won't charge the battery in its not plugged in. I do have the caspers field fix installed so I'm not sure if it's ok to run it with out the plug in. Any one else run into this situation. I posted a picture of the new alternator two pin and my old one and stock plug.

Well guy at powermaster wasn't correct. I started my car with the sock alternator in there. I get 14.4 volts on the scan master. Unplug the plug and 11.3 volts. Dam
 
Looks like that alternator is not made for a GN, just looking at that 2 prong plug should be enough to alert you

If the builder of the alt says to tie in the 2 prongs to the lug in the back , then the alternator will be putting out max volts all the time and boil your battery, I can only imagine your car going up in flames after driving down the freeway
That same plug is on my 67 bird and it uses a external regulator....

I would return it and get a 200 amp caprice alt
 
Yeah looks like it's going back. Powermaster has it fitting the buick G/N But I don't think so. Its a nice looking alternator at 217.00.
 
I have the PM 200 amp on my car and I believe it was 37864. I did the install and don't remember anything being different?
 
Looks like I'm going to have to go the 200 amp route. The PM I bought was 150 amp $217.00 The 200 amp is over $400.00

Yep I bit the bullet and paid the $419. Of course if you don't want chrome it's a little cheaper.

That alternator has the early style regulator in it. They haven't used that style in years. Send it back and get the correct one.
 
Probably a 1 wire alternator. They don't require a powered signal to start the charging. It will run without the plug hooked up. But you won't have the charge indicator light without it hooked up. I would also recommend getting the correct fit, but you could hook up the idiot light circuit with a harness from any part store for an old GM vehicle. The signal/reference wire needs to be left off or the alternator field stays powered and will kill the battery.

Have you tried your local alternator rebuild shop?
I'm selling a bunch of stuff, are you buying chrome parts?
 
The cases are standard GM Delco alternators. The regulator is the only difference. Usually they come with a cap over the regulator terminals, but they are still there

I like the PM alt. especially if your running dual fans, bigger fuel pump ect. Everything just works better seems like.

Better safe than sorry. All that plus FAST and a stereo system :) Gota have some tunes.
