Ok here's a question for you law abiding citzens. Some local businesses organize a weekly cruise night in downtown Crystal Lake IL. The entire downtown area (mostly public parking spaces) is set aside for classic car parking only. Recently they changed the definition of a classic to pre-1980 only.

Here's the question: Can the "organizers" LEGALLY stop anyone from parking in these public parking spots????

(specifically me - with a non-classic  87 Buick)

After being chased away once... I would love to go back, sneak into a good spot, and tell them "I'm parking here. If you don't like it that's your problem."

I can't see a cop writing me a parking ticket for that... but maybe there's some other lamewod offense that could be conjured up?

Hello neighbor, I am in Algonquin and am painfully aware of this issue. The bottom line that I have gotten to is that the cruise nights are created by an ordinance and in that ordinance exists the pre 1980 language. Therefore, the police are empowered to write tickets and/or tow your car. I have seen them threaten that in CL.

Now, I am the vindictive type, so I have considered buying, say a 1973 Maverick 4-door rust bucket, oil burning POS and parking it in their coveted pre 80 lots.

My suggestion, come on up to Barrington on Thursday nights. Fewer idiots, no restrictions.

yea thats some bs

Ive come across this before around here as well. And what really pisses me off is the late model vettes sitting in there when you park your car down the street and walk up to the show. My car isnt the straightest car you have seen but it is alot nicer to look at than some of the clunkers you have in there.

With a big sign in the windshield: "CLASSIC CAR" :)

See you in Barrington!

Barrington is MUCH nicer than Crystal Lake. If they don't want you there, why go there? Barrington allows new cars there...last night a new Ford GT parked next to me there! There also has been Enzo Ferrari's, Lamborgini's, REAL 427 Cobra's...Barrington grocery getters. But even with all those exotic cars, my 87 T Type gets a lot of looks (and most car guys know it's quicker in the 1/4 mile than those exotics anyway).

The pre-80 deal is probably designed to keep the ricers out. Can you imagine if all those rice burners came to your favorite cruise night? Yikes! The sound of the ricer engines would make me feel guilty for not mowing my lawn that day.

A “Classic Car Show” or “Cruise Night” IMO is traditionally made up of American Hot Rods or Muscle Cars. Generally good organizers know that a GN or T-Type is clearly a Muscle Car, but their hands are tied due to the Ricer problem. That’s why we are seeing these rules come about. Within the last 5 to 6 years imports have tried to make their mark at these events. Most event organizers and event attendees have no interest and are just tired of the strobe lights, wings, yellow wire looms, thumping radios, DVD’s and the infamous FART CAN muffler. That forces organizers to look at attendee’s opinions and attendance. Granted our opinions matter, but for 3 or 4 GNs that show up (I’m talking local cruise night) they have to deal with 10, 20, 30 or more Ricers. I don’t blame them; I wouldn’t want to deal with that cr-- either.

I ran into a very similar situation during the Cruisin' the Coast event they have every year along the Mississippi gulf coast. I wanted to enter it like a few of my buddies with older cars, but alas it was for cars 25 years or older. I still went down there and had alot of fun and attended most of the events but my car wasn't "officially entered". I honestly believe it was mainly to keep out the ricers.

Chris,

I'm not sure if you asked, but "special interest" vehicles are able to participate at CTC but are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Couldn't guaranted they'd let a GN or TTA in but they indicated that my buddy's GNX would'nt be a problem (though he never actually applied).

Hell, who needs to register at CTC. 5000 registered cars plus nearly that many that just "show up and cruise"!
Y'all coming this year?

As for the subject of this thread, have you talked to the organizers to see if they'll make an exception for cars such as ours? Never hurts to ask!

Beat them at their own game. Tell them it is a 79 or 80 regal and almost no one at the place would know that it is an 87.
