Pre-Carfax VIN History needed

Does anybody know of a way to track down the current status of a vehicle(registered, stolen, salvaged, etc.) on a 1960's vehicle.

I have an opportunity to acquire a nice specimen, but there is no paperwork, plates, or otherwise to support the search....

I'm aware of the companies in the car mags that will assist in the registration and titleing of vehicles with no history, I would just like to verify the vehicle is not stolen or otherwise before laying out any cash for the process...

Any help would be appreciated.

If you know anyone in the law enforcement field have them run a NICB check on the VIN.

Come to find out, the VIN is missing from the vehicle......

The VIN advertised was one that was purchased on Ebay......can you smell it from where you are?
