My father is big into gas mileage and has been since the late 70's, tracing his mileage, add aerodynamic aids. He believes in doing a 50/50 mix of 87 and 93 Octane (alternating tank to tank)
I think it's more the tuning and knock control that pcms use. If it hears a fair amount of knock, it pulls timing and adds fuel to fight it. It's cheaper to run higher octane and live with less knock and more timing. That will increase mpg.
I'd be a hyper miler if I owned an SUV right now.
We bought our suburban with 2wd just to save on gas, 4wd eats several mpgs. The funny thing is we went to many of the dealerships in the lexington, ky area and told the salespeople what we were looking for. They wouldn't even entertain purchasing a 2wd unit for us. They said they just don't sell if we decided we didn't like it. Ours was an ebay purchase that we drove to South Carolina to inspect and purchase. I have been tracking mileage since I bought it and am getting well over 20mpg average city/highway. 16-20 in town and 20-25 hwy. Not too bad for the boat that it is. Things like removing the roof rack, efans and some good tuning help along with some other mpg mods. I picked up a used jet DST for it and my 03 regal. I sold one license to a friend for $100, to correct his speedometer and only have $25 in it for each of my vehicles now. I am sure I have or will get more than that out of it this month alone.
