the problem is the senators and representatives make a habit of following a wave of political correctness or overreactinig to an incident - the result is they pass a law which is total bs

this is why it is so important to hire police officers with great character and a ton of common sense- these types of officers are the only protection the general public has from the stupidity of the lawmakers

its quite obvious some of the officers on here are seriously harassing the citizens of their states because of their complete lack of common sense

and it doesnt matter if this girl did something else to justify her arrest or the citation - the officer commenting on here would gladly give her or anyone else a ticket for this stupid piece of legislature regardless of their atttitude

Well Said Turbojimmy..

Its all about the attitude.. I don't know how others do enforcement but I personally will let the violator determine if they want a citation or not (Within reason, speeding, etc).. Meaning I initially treat everyone that I stop with the same courtesy as I would want to be treated.. Now if thier initial response is "This is BS!!! Your and AHOLE!!! Well they are going to hold one.. But if there is a compelling reason complimented with the return of the same courtesy then a warning is just as effective..They will slow down at least for that day.. In this case, if she was an ass..she would get a ticket and I would confiscate the lights in question.. If she was polite then I would giver her a screw driver and she could remove them before she got back on the road. The bottom line is that none of us inclusive of the media were NOT on scene.. Nor any of us were in that courtroom so it is difficult to come to any conclusion other than we can assume something 1 way or anyother..

TurboTer- Whats up man...I am all for freedom and equal rights and all of the benefits of the constitution but it seems when there is some type of govt action or someone got arrested, its all a conspiracy theory and everything is wrong and needs to be challenged... Do you happen to have frequent run ins with the law or or is there some other motive?

How can an organization devoted to the rights of the INDIVIDUAL be a "commie" organization at the same time?

HAHAHAHAHAHA

I just saw this thread after I posted on the poll thread.

Simply.. the penaly was too harsh. As someone said before, I'm sure there is more to this then we all no. If not, then the penalty was too harsh.

Now, what I'm LAUGHING at is the posts made in here. THE NAZIS ARE COMING, THE NAZIS ARE COMING!!!!:D If you hate the gov't THAT bad... why don't you leave?? Every post seems to be a PROOF that the NAZIS ARE COMING and BIG BROTHER WILL OWN YOU!!! This is not a case of the nazis coming, this is a case of a judge made a bad call. We are all human, we all make mistakes and it's clear (if this is all true) that the judge did make a bad call. That is why we have an appeals process. I'm sure this 'poor' girl won't go to jail.

*SIGH*

Everyone's entitled and it's always good for a laugh I suppose.

I am usually one that is very strict and feel laws are important but this girl seems to be a good kid who just graduated high school with honors. I think a warning would have been fine.

I feel one this needs to be mentioned cuz I find it funny. I know there are some cops on this board and they are always talking about how laws are so important. My question is, if laws are so important why do cops always seem to break them?

I am not a cop basher, I think police are very important. What I can't stand is when i see cops put on their BLUES (which is what this is about) and go thru a red light just cuz they don't feel like waiting. Or when they pull up on your butt on the highway and tailgate you within 6 inches of your car in order to get you to pull over (when they have no lights on at the time) only to do 100 mph right by you when you finally do move over. Cops seem to be the biggest proponents of laws but also seem to be some of the biggest offenders.

If this girls Dad was a cop would she be doing any jail time? NOPE. He would have made a call to the cop and things would have been taken care of. It is clearly a couble standard.

I hear you.. But in defense a couple things..

"What I can't stand is when i see cops put on their BLUES (which is what this is about) and go thru a red light just cuz they don't feel like waiting. "
--- This is a perception.. This type of abuse does happen but a very very low percentage.. Understand that when an officer goes to a call there are basically 3 diffent response codes...at least in my area.:

Code 1 - Non urgent normal traffic speed and driving response.

Code 2 - Urgent expedite arrival (Meaning stop at redlights and clear the intersection with the blues and keep going) but get there expedentially!

Code 3 - Balls to the wall..Lights and siren with regard to safety!

So not speaking on behalf of everyone.. but I would say that 40-50% of calls officers go on is the Code 2 response..

20 % Code 1
30% Code 3

Then again it will vary depending upon where you work..
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Or when they pull up on your butt on the highway and tailgate you within 6 inches of your car in order to get you to pull over (when they have no lights on at the time) only to do 100 mph right by you when you finally do move over."

GUILTY AS CHARGED! :) Sorry there are times that I cannot read the plate, maybe i need glasses or something else.. However, I try to put the blues on as soon as I can.

I am not saying all cops do this but they do it. The 3 types of calls don't really apply here as I have seen the cops turn the lights on, go thru the red light, and once thru they turn the lights back off.

Just as there are a small % of cops that break these rules, there are a smaller % of people trying to impersonate a cop. Yet, this 18 yr old girl with little blue lights on her wipers (which I hate to by the way. They sell them at my local grocery store right next to the Uncle Ben's) has to do jail time for being charged with impersonating a cop essentially.

Cops do abuse their power just as politicians do. Politicians cut essential services such as education and healthcare and preach budgetary reasons but they all have 10 assistants, drivers, secret service, expense accounts. It is all an abuse of power.

turboscott...Just to clarify..

"The 3 types of calls don't really apply here as I have seen the cops turn the lights on, go thru the red light, and once thru they turn the lights back off. "

I was referring to exactly that.. after the intersection was cleared.. Then shut the lights off..

"Code 2 - Urgent expedite arrival (Meaning stop at redlights and clear the intersection with the blues and keep going) but get there expedentially! "

I agree with you.. There are bad apples on the tree in everyplace you go.. I am definetly not a fan of politcians.. :D

What would you have done if instead of getting the ticket you would have gotten jail time? Ouch, that would be uncalled for, as this was.

That's why I said in my first post "The punishment does seem harsh"

and again in my second post "I do agree, jail was too harsh, probably probation was too."

Of course, if I mouthed off to the officer, I'd expect to be dealt a harsher penalty, maybe like this girl. Maybe something else happened, the parents could have tried to make a big stink over their baby girl. Some people think that if they get loud about being "tax payers" (as if the cop & judge aren't too) that they can get out of things. After all, this article was written, but as stated, the judge isn't free to comment on it since it's being appealed. Pretty one sided.

BTW, I wish MS cops had the mentality of appergo. I haven't gotten off with a warning since I was about 18, and I'm never rude.

Big deal?

If what the article said, was all there is to that case, then the punishment seems a little harsh but I have a hard time believing that a judge would impose such a penalty for these funny, stupid looking lights. Therefore, like some said, there must be more to this case and I'm sure the attitude inside the courtroom had something to do with it.
If this conclusion is right then I really don't think it is a big deal! 24 hours in jail for letting this kid grow up with a sense of reality and teaching her what law and respect is all about because apparently the parents weren't able to do so. Maybe if some more traffis offenders would smell some prison air overnight, streets would be safer these days :D

Ter... little paranoid, aren't you?

Thanks to the ACLU,,,criminals that kill and are caught for their crimes have all the rights and the dead victims have none. Case in point, the Scott Peterson murder trail in California. Where's Lacy peterson's rights???

Lets not get off topic here.. ;)

The whole criminal rights vs victim rights is a whole other issue in itself...

Besides, you know we are all fruits, nuts, and homos out here so my judgement may be skewed. :D :D Well maybe not......but I'd hate to see us lose our reputation anyway. :)
:p :p :p Bwahahah, now that was funny!!

Yup, had to do that today. There's times you need to get someplace fast and go through intersections. Depending on the area, time of day, traffic and a bunch of other factors it's just a fact sometimes it's better to keep the lights off when traveling to your call. People FLIP when they see flashing lights and do some crazy stuff. If you keep'em off and just drive fast like everyone else on the road you're less of a hazard.

Aperrego hit the nail on the head. Seeing cops arbitrarily turn lights on/off at will is perception. Again today I was going to a reported fight in progress lights and siren. Another deputy arrived before me and found it was much less than reported over the phone. He called off the other responding cars. I shut all my equipment down after about 3 miles and while approaching an intersection. What did the drivers waiting at the light see?...a cop driving at 90mph lights and siren then stop at a red light and turn everything off and turn right. It's the WHOLE picture people are missing.

Another issue is the "hold up alarm". You don't want the bad guys to hear you coming so you shut down your emergency equipment or approach by stealth. See what I'm getting at here?....

They're devoted to scratching thier rear ends. They never stick up for gun owners rights and have extreme leftist causes.
