I've got a hot air 85 and my brother has a intercooled 86 parts car. i was wondering what all it would involve to put his intercooled setup on my motor.

or would it be easier just to put his entire motor in my car?

I may be wrong, but I believe the hot air cars require a different/better compressor side seal. The throttle body is on the other side of turbo on a hot air car. The turbo will get 100% vacume from motor, and can suck oil thru a regular turbos seals.

I guess you should ask an expert on this, or just give it a try. It should just bolt up, right?

Whoops, sorry. I thought you were asking about the turbo only, not the whole deal. That's a hard conversion, and $$. Better off selling car and buying a 86-87.

I belief you are asking just taking an IC car turbo and drop it in place of the hot air turbo (??) ............. If that is the case the following must occur:

Take the inlet adapter of the HA turbo and have it welded by Limit to the IC turbo compressor side outlet. You will need to clock the turbo so it fits correctly.

The TB will need the be on an adapter as it is "cocked" on the HA turbo. There were a few made a while back but no longer available. (Hot Air genius and journeyman Lee Thompson made some I hear)

Same DumbA$$ mistake as previous reply. I should learn ro READ first. Sorry.

thanks for the info, but i have a complete 86 IC motor that i could use parts from, so if it would be easier could i just take all parts involving the turbo, like the intake manifold, throttle body, turbo, IC, headers, and all the piping. and just bolt it too the 85 block?

Never done it but a lot more to it then that. Do a search. It can in fact be done and has been done in many other vehicles. Most people advice against it however, due to the complexity and associated cost. Good luck!

what added costs are involved if you already have all the parts?
i'd just swap all the "good" parts off the 86- along with the engine wiring harness and ecm- and call it good.
it would seem to be a simple remove/replace operation. it's not like you'd have to search the country for oddball brackets and what not.

You will need to replace everything. The block deck height may be a little too tall for the 86-87 intake manifold. Anyone?...... I know the block has a few differences. How about the turbo oil return. It will need to be switched from rear to front.

Why not just rebuild the 86 motor in your spare time, then swap in one weekend.

can be done

Yes, all these items WILL bolt on to your block. I have done an '84 like this.

You must also use '87 wiring harness [or adapter] and all '87 sensors, computer and engine accesory brackets.

What Nick & turbo2nr said. In addition, you'll also have to figure out where to put the fuel filter. :)
