right now i have a stock turbo but will someday upgrade to a ta-49 my goal is to get my car somewere into the 12's maybe like 12.6 or 12.7 but daily driven. I have a walbro 340 and hotwire kit, AFPR and fuel gauge on the way, everything else is in sign. and im thinking that to get to were i wanna get i will need a injector upgrade. I have heard that its not good to get a bigger injector than needed, so i was thinking that 36lbers would be good, what do you guys think?

I have a mild combo too with stock turbo. I plan to go to a 49 or bigger someday but my stocker is very tight so I hate to change it now.
I put in a set of 50's and you can not tell the difference with the right chip. The chip guys have that down.

i'd go with 50's,then you are done because i bet you get a bigger turbo than a 49 in the future cause that's the same thing i did,i thought oh ai'll never get bigger than that so i bought bluetop's.well i just spent more money getting 50's.

Stock injectors AND turbo (assuming they are in good shape) will easily go 12.6's so until you decide to speed up that ET goal I'd leave well enough alone. Spend that $$ somewhere it'll do more to support that mid 12 goal, such as losing those dronemaster mufflers in your sig (they do not work well on forced induction cars, too much backpressure!) and/or an alky injection kit.

You can get into the mid to high 12s, even low 12s/high 11s with a stock turbo and injectors with supporting items like scan tool, race fuel, and slicks. See my website and gnttype.org for more info on the basics. If your stock injectors have higher mileage, an upgrade would help and maybe easier to tune.

These cars 60 foot very well, especially with a hard launch with boost, and that is a key to lower ETs and stock turbo. For reference, multiply eighth mile times by 1.57 for approximated quarter mile times.

If you're only going to run ~12.6's, and keep the boost below ~22psi, the 36's will work.
But if you get bit by the bug, and decide to crank up the boost and go faster ("if 22psi is good, 24psi must be better), you'll wish you had done 50's. They can be trimmed up for regular use, and they'll support all the power that TA49 will make.

tim87tr,
You have THREEE of these things now?!? And one goes 10's?!?
Grrrrrrrr!!! ;)

dconner your right about the exhaust, but just to let you know it was on there when i bought the car. So there's some people that say i should just go to 50's. These are what i wanted until i heard that you shouldnt get an injector bigger than what you need, some kind of performance reason behind it, i just dont know what it is. So would the 50's be ok, not to big for what im trying to get to. because i really think that ill stay with the ta-49 for awhile? (once i get it that is, scanmaster and alky is first!!!) Thanks for everyone help.

A couple of comments:

All the advice by previous posters regarding stock injectors is predicated on their performing as new. The problem is, they're 17 years old, possibly tired, probably dirty, and injector technology (e.g. spray pattern, fouling resistance, opening and closing speeds, positive shutoff) is better today.

Second, I'd look at 50's or even hi Z 57's. Hi Z 57's are the largest injectors compatible with the drivers in the stock ECM.

I won't go into all the old wives' tales surrounding the inabilities of old chips to run large injectors on stock and nearly stock motors. Let's just say the chip guys have gotten smarter, and leave it at that, so no modern injector/modern chip should run poorly on any application.

One last thing. If you're thinking about a 49, try a 44. No stupid bell/gasket/nuts, optimized compressor housing (not choked like the 49), more flow and HP. TA's suk. Think TE!!!

:D

REALLY? THE ta SUCKS, NEVER HEARD THAT BEFORE WHATS THE DIFFEENCE BETWEEN TA-49 AND TE-44

The TA is a so-called stock appearing turbo. The compressor cover (housing, scroll) has a small inlet, necessitating the use of an adapter (bell, reducer), which takes you from MAF duct size down to compressor inlet size.

With a TE, the MAF duct attaches directly to the compressor inlet. Lose the bell. Lose the gasket. Lose the 2 nuts. Eliminating the bell results in less pressure being lost due to fluid compression. Pressure loss at the suction of a compressor operating at slightly less than atmospheric pressure, as is the case with turbochargers, represents an EXTREME DRAG on performance. It the same reason we use big, open air filters, bigger MAFs, straighter, shorter, smoother ducts, and the like.

A TE44 has the same compressor wheel as a TA49, the difference being that it's cover is optimized for the wheel. Ergo, higher flow and HP capability.

Opting for a smaller than optimal compressor cover is about as clever as carrying 500 pounds around in your trunk for fun...

For some reason lots of folks don't get that???

Oh, and there are lots more little differences between a 49 and 44 that most folks have no knowledge of and would swear otherwise. If you really want to get educated on all the nuances of these 2 turbos, spend a few minutes on the phone with John Craig at Limit - he'll be happy to run them down.

Good luck with your build-up!!!

:D

hey, strikeeagle
thanx for all your information, i will definently be doing some more research on that. thanks again.

I just wanted to chime in here. I have run the 50's for a few yers now. I have been very happy with them. From stock turbo to TE - 60. From mid 12's to mid 11's with plenty to go. I use an ME chip and my car runs great. Excellent characteristics as far as driving and racing. Hope this helps but I do like mine. An alternative that many have used and I use in my daily driver are the 009 or 42.5 lb injectors. You can usually pick these up at a reasonable price and some of the chip guys have them running vey well. I can tell you from personal experience though that I like my 50's better than my 009's, however they do work well and have been 12.80's on pump gas alchy and stock engine turbo tranny combo. That is with a 2.2 60 foot time.
