The groove around the flange is for exhaust gas from the EGR valve to enter the intake. The home made plate is the best solution, then put the adapter on top of it. You can also make a small plate to block the EGR valve after removal.
That is what I did. I did make my own gasket.

Speaking about intakes I belive my buddy has acouple in his stash still

The instructions that used to come with the KB manifold state that the manifold ports are smaller than the intake ports in the head to stop reversion and to not modify them in any way. That makes sense for stock heads and good low end power. I ported my intakes to match my GN1 heads and the ported irons on my spare engine. The stock manifold ports have got to choke the engine at high RPM. It just made sense to match them to the heads and open up the runners.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think the KB #1 and maybe the Weiand / Yunick intakes will work with the older heads plus the "newer" high port heads. I thought I read somewhere that the KB #1 will even work on the 225.

I wonder why most of the old timers used a square bore carburetor instead of a spread bore? Jim Ruggles used a Q-Jet on one of his projects but he was also using the stock 4.1L intake.

Thanks guys for the information.

The stock intake are good into the high 9s Low 10s aren’t really restrictive
