I'm nearing the end of my epic battle with the gauges... I'm putting in a mechanical water temp gauge... Do I get some sort of adapter for the sending unit, or can I just put the 3/8 fitting into the intake without the 1/2 bushing thing....

you need a bushing in there so it will actually seal when you tighten it down.
the adapter bushing goes in, then you put the probe in and tighten up the nut to seal it all up. the gauge should have come with a few different adapter bushings, one of which will work for you.

I had the fitting tig welded into the manifold, then you can just screw in the probe. I'll try to get a pic up later.

No, thats the fan switch. You have to grind the autometer fitting a little, and drill out the manifold so they slip into one another. Hope this helps. I ran into the same problems whan I was hooking up my guages.
