I just bought my 87 GN in December and am starting to have a unique problem with the trans. The trans has been reworked by a very reputable vendor that posts to this website, so it is not stock. Here is the problem.

This started last weekend when the alternator went out, I do not know if these problems are related. Alternator now fixed. After driving the car for about 10-15 minutes, the car will shift through gears 1-2-3 before I hit 15 mph. This is during normal driving conditions (didn't want to jump on it after this started to happen). Also, when slowing down, the trans does not want to downshift or disengage before coming to a complete stop. If car rests for 30 minutes, it is then ok for another 10-15 minutes, then the same problem occurs again (This was on my way home). Fluid level is ok. I am hoping this is some sensor that can easily be replaced. Anyone know what this could be? Thanks in advance.

That actually sounds a lot like a sticky converter clutch solenoid. Happens to every 200-4R before long and easy to replace by dropping the pan.

Crawl underneath and disconnect the four-wire plug on the driver's side of the transmission while the vehicle is cooled down. Drive it for the 10-15 minute period and see if it still acts up. I suspect it won't.

If it does not, it's the solenoid. If it does, let us know.

Yep, I think Greg is right, torque converter lockup solenoid. It sounds like the Same thing that was happening to my car. It would shift quick, bog down and when you go to stop it would feel like it was going to stall. It wouldn't try to stall in1st gear or reverse, I don't think the converter locks up in these gears.Try it.
Easy fix and the part is about $30. Also a good time to put a drain plug in unless you like that transmission fluid shampoo.

Thanks Greg and Glenn for the help. I looked under the car tonight and saw the four-wire plug to disconnect. I'll try it out this weekend and let you know how it worked. I'm hoping it is only a $30 part to fix this problem!!!
