hey Julio,

I'm too lazy to go back and read the instructions. I'm getting a 3000 stall Vigilante converter this week and would like to launch at maybe 7-10 psi boost. Which way do all the little screws turn to delay the turn on point? Thanks! Also, I would like to add that when I changed my oil, the oil was pretty well thinned down from all that methanol. Oil psi went up 10 lbs with the oil change.

By increasing the turnon point, you'll have less alky at the boost your running at. Unless you up the boost as well, or Initial.

In laymans terms, if you run lets say 24 PSI and turn kit on at 4 PSI you have 20 PSI worth of resolution. If you turn the kit on at 8 PSI and run 24 now you only have 16 PSI worth of resolution.. What this means is now at 24 PSI you'll have the alky you had at 20.. or in other words less. Correction is to increase the "Initial" to compensate for the lesser resolution.

Running the car at high boost breaks down the oil. Alky or no alky.

Running the car at high boost increases maintenance. Forget your 3K mile oil changes on a high boost motor.. aint gonna happen ;) Unless you like tearing bearings.

My own rule of thumb, I pull dipstick.. if the oil is not honey colored.. its getting changed. Your better off using 1.00 a quart clean havoline oil, than 1500 mile beat up synthetic.

The turnon at 4 PSI doesnt really get it spraying, only minor amounts at low boost. So changing to 7 PSI wont change much. Your probably spraying too much alcohol or fuel.

Just my .02 Oil is very cheap in the scheme of things.

Ohh.. turbot2112 .. correct Sir.

I have one question and one comment. The question: Should I just leave the turn on point alone as long as the car doesn't stumble at the line when I'm brake torquing? The boost will only max out at 20 psi, for safety sake. If I don't hit 11's, I'll turn up the boost a pound or two.

Comment: I rarely saw 20 psi boost in every day driving. Maybe 15 psi max with the Very Rare 20 psi. I did, however, fill the methanol when it got low maybe 3 times. My mechanic said he could smell the methanol in the oil when he changed it. So, the point I'm trying to make is, if people are re-filling their methanol resevoir, they best change the oil at every 3rd refill or less. Just my .02.

Rick,
Methanol is almost odorless. Not to discount your mechanic, he may be smelling fuel from an overly rich condition.

These cars when they have a BLM issue, like a vacuum leak, MAF problem, EGR, etc... will add a lot of fuel into the motor compensating for the extra air.

How bout this test. Whats your MPG while driving the car normally? Is it at least 18-20+ mpg? Dont answer unless you have checked this recently. Like within the last week. When you do.. then we'll address how much alky is being used up. If your getting 12-15 MPG, you have other issues that are not alky related.

Ive had a customers car with a high blm at idle, its oil would smell like fuel not alcohol from the washdown it was getting. When the BLM's are high, the ecm will be adding fuel trying to compensate for the percieved lean condition. I'm not saying this is the case, but just keep an eye on it. Another test, what is your BLM reading at idle?

I personally run a LOT of methanol through my system, my oil doesnt get hit. Trust me, i'm a straight shooter, i'm more concerned in making sure your on top of anything that could possibly be an issue with your motor.

Post back. This is a technical forum. Lets learn.

Oil changes are good..

Julio

I have just recently done an oil change on my ride and can say that it does not look any thinner or smell differently. I too run alot of Meth and don't see the harm in it. Oil pressure is dead on even though I beat the crap out of my 130,000 mile motor. Luv my alky kit :)

Oops, didn't mention that I had experimented with the turnon points and found that 4 psi turnon netted my the cleanest run with regards to knock (24psi 0.0 knock) still managed a 1.69' launching at 6-7# with no bog.

87GN_D - What was your speed at the end of the 1/4 mile? Seems like with your mods, and the 60 foot time, you should have been in the 11's. What kind of tires do you have? I'm just wondering. Thanks.

Rick, my mph was been held back due to original 130k stock valve springs that didn't allow me to shift or rev past 4000 rpm. Next time around though I'll probably try locking the converter as well.

Stock longblock car at low-mid 20's boost= low 12's is typical.

At 28 PSI mid-high 11's. with a 1.65-1.75 60 foot and alky chip is not a high timing race gas chip.

BLM numbers at idle? Post back..

BLM=128. MPG was 15 in the city before the Vigilante 3000 stall. Lower speedo cable broke (so odometer doesn't work) so I can't check mpg right now until I get a new cable. Would you happen to have a source for the cable? I have the gnx dash and I'm waiting for reply from Tom Hauser (gnxdash.com).

Most of our cars wont run 128 at idle unless the chip is an open loop idle, the computer was just reset and hasnt learned, or you got real lucky with your fuel pressure setting.

Do this leave the scanmaster set to BLM.. now go drive around for a while. Let the ecm learn the settings.. as you give it gas, lift the gas, etc.. watch the numbers. Are they +-10 from 128 all the time at all speeds? Especially when decellerating to a stop.

Leave you with that puzzle :)
