My weekend upgrade schedule for the GN is to replace the mechanical fan with the RC dual fan setup attached to a Racetronix fan harness.

First thing I like advice on is any suggestions on mounting the RC Dual fans. I haven't taken off the shroud or existing fan to match up, but that will my first task.

The second thing is wiring the Racetronix fan harness. In a previous thread in this forum someone from Ractronix told everyone that they'd provide eveything to connect the harness up to the ECM for 84-85 conversions. Well I purchased the harness and even emailed them ahead of the purchase, but didn't receive anything other than their fan harness (which I must say looks like a great product). I've emailed them for help after the purchase in wiring the harness to my ECM, but didn't receive any response to my emails.

Thank You

Hmmmm.....as far as I know, you cant make an electric fan work with the 84-85 ecms unless you just manually control it with a switch. As far as the dual fans go, they wont really fit on the stock radiator, and you'll have to either cut the stock shroud or get an 86/87 radiator hold down plate. You'll need a bigger radiator for the fans to fit well. Id suggest the F-Body aluminum radiator, with is alot larger....but even with that the fans need a little trimming. I think you'll need to convert your ecm over to the 86/87 type before you can install the fans with computer control.

I've already converted over to an 87 ECM, so that part is done. If I'm going to take a wild guess, I strip the connector end and wire the red and blue wires to a positive source and the negative to a pin in the ECM.

I guess once I take the shroud off it'll be easier for me to see how well the fan doe or doesn't fit. I hate to hack up the fan shroud, so maybe a search for the 86/87 radiator support is my best bet.

Thanks

Oh ok...you made it sound like you still had the 85 ECM. Im not so sure how the racetronix harness works, as I used the Caspers Electronics fan conversion setup and the dual fan realy harness from Caspers. Im guessing though that you have the right idea with the posative and negative wires. I dont quite remember which pin the wire goes to in the ECM, but perhaps someone else does.....if they dont, Im sure I could dig up and instruction manual somewhere. I would agree with getting the upper radiator support, it looks alot better; you can find one at www.gbodyparts.com. I would suggest the F-Body radiator too, I couldnt find a way to fit the fans on the stock radiator, it was too small.

so when u end up installin these dual fan setups u have to get rid of the fan shroud? anyone have a pic of there dual fans already hooked up?would like to see it done

Converting to electric fan

I am working on the same project on my 85 GN.
D2 on the large ECM connector is the pin you need to connect your relay to.
Just for safety I installed a fuse on the heavy wire to the fan motor and a smaller inline fuse holder on the relay circuit to protect the ECM in the event of some catastrophy. I think it was 20 amp on the fan (single fan in my case from a Fiero) and .5 amp on the relay coil circuit.
I got all the parts from the local pick and pull autowreckers.
Rather than wreck my original shroud I pulled one off a V6 GM car. Can't remember if it was a Cutlass or a Monte or?? I cut that with a small keyhole type saw and mounted the framework for the fan on the plastic tabs. If you need more details let me know.
Oh yes one more thing don't remove the mechanical fan until you have checked out your installation and verified that it works. :)
Next I want to figure out how to have the fan run for a couple minutes after ignition off to cool down the underhood temperature.

Anybody who needs the extra connector, wire and terminals for converting to the 86/87 ECM please e-mail support@racetronix.com with your requirements and TID #. The parts will be sent out free of charge.

Did it, got the RC Fans and Racetronix harness in. The setup runs great and the RC fans slipped right into the side groves of the radiator. The only fabricating I did was hacked up the top of the shroud to produce a top radiator support. A friend pointed out to me that fan shrouds are easy to find at the junkyards, so I don't feel as bad about cutting it up with the hack saw.

The wiring worked by cutting off the connector on the Racetronix and soldering the blue and red wires together with a wire going to a positive source. The negative black wire was soldered to a wire running to the D2 pin on the 87 ECM harness.

Thanks!

hey GNAsucka thanx for the pics look setup looks good wat radiator r u using for ur setup and wat dual fans r those? and i tired gettin a good look at the pulley where the mechanical fan goes wat did u do did u just remove it completely or did u remove it and add somekind of weight or balancer in its place?

The radiator is an F-Body radiator off a 92 comaro with the 350. The fans are the Ramchargers Dual Fans, just trimmed down a bit. I just removed the fan off the pully, nothing else.
