Whats the easiest way of knowing what kind of rear end i have? It is not in the car it is just the rear end itself and i dont know what car it is orginal from so i cant check the RPO sticker.

Thanks

Pull the diff cover, see if its Limited-Slip, if its a GM axle, it should have a teeth count on the sige of the ring gear. take the big number divide by little number. Or you could count pinion revolutions compared to tire revs.

I was thinking more along the lines of a casting number ??? i was hoping to not take it apart.

If you bought the thing from somebody, I'd most likely pull the cover and inspect the goods as well as a diff fluid change. If you count the number of bolts holding the cover on, (I.e. 10 bolt, 12 bolt etc) itll generally have a 10 or 12 bolt ring gear. Normally. The difference between a 7.5" & an 8.5" diff well, IDK.

Check the tops or bottoms of the axle tubes for numbers.

They should be stamped on there.

Visual bolt hole pattern and size can also get you a general idea as well as previously mentioned.
